Honestly, just run a hot cycle with a mug of vinegar on the top wrack once a month. Easy peasy.

I suspect it's an error in the heading on this item at Amazon. You're meant to use these once a week, so a 12-month supply would be 12 packets of four tablets. From the price and picture of three packs of four, I'm betting that's what you get - three packs of four tablets = 12 tablets (which is 3 months' supply), not 12 months' worth of tablets. The selected option even says "12 count (Pack of 1) $18.44". May or may not be something you can argue with CS if they only send 3 months supply, I don't know.

From the product description:
Simply place at the bottom of you dishwasher with your regular load • Recommended weekly use.

Now, at this price, it's still a bit of a deal for three packs. But it would be a smoking deal for 12.

Baking Soda
Vinegar (or can use Citric Acid powder as well)

Important to note that most modern dishwashers will do a prewash and then a quick drain, before starting normal cycle. So putting anything in the bottom of the tub will end up getting drained out after 10 mins or so. Put the stuff in a bowl or slim tray on the top rack

It's funny how these companies have made it sound like they have some sort of miracle formula they squeeze into a tablet. Nothing special

You can see on the packaging itself it says once a month, the error is in the Amazon listing that says to use it weekly

I see that now, but it's so odd. Not only is the weekly bit in the description, the 3-pack of these clearly says on the front to use weekly. That's what I've bought in the past.

The 3-pack [amazon.com] has a link on the page where you have the option to select the 4-pack shown here as well, so it looks like the same product with a slightly different design and packaging that on one says use weekly, and on the other says use monthly.

If you have a pool, you can use muriatic acid every 4-6 months.

ive have been using my dish washer for 3 years now about once to twice a week, and my dish washer has always came out squeaky clean, how do other dish washer not be clean afterward? i dont have a fancy dishwasher its just a basic looking old school one from Bosch no LED display or analog, just hard actual buttons to push etc. what makes ur dish washer becomes greasy like that? i do rinse off excess stuff before putting them in the dish washer as per instructions.

In my experience, it's really just to remove hard water mineral buildup. Which is why running the dishwasher every so often with vinegar in a cup (as noted by a commenter above) works pretty well. These tablets are usually just some combination of citric acid or similar that will dissolve said mineral buildup. I pick them up when on sale as they are convenient. I use the steam jets in my dishwasher and after a few months there is noticeable mineral buildup under the jets that I soak with vinegar to remove.

Also, I run my dishwasher once or twice a day, so yours will probably go for years before seeing much buildup compared with mine Smilie

If I have to buy a pool to use muriatic acid it negates any savings

You can waste your money on these for a dollar a piece or I'll put the name below where you can buy the evolve chlorine tablets which are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter and basically work. Even better you just throw one in your dishwasher and you can buy them from a small container all the way up to 250 tablets for $25. That's $0.10 a tablet versus 10 times for the scam tablets that don't even work...

Check out this product!... $0.10 a tablet versus a dollar and you can use them in concert with your daily wash. And believe me it turbocharges your dishwasher. And remember you got to run your hot water tap first because otherwise if you're running pods or whatever they get dissolved and thrown out in the pre-wash this is why dishes never get clean cuz people just start to dishwasher up and by the time your dishwasher is filled is filled. Half full of cold water before your hot water's got a chance to get from your water heater to your dishwasher supply line.

One of the most important rules with dishwashers is always run your hot tap right near your dishwasher before you turn on your dishwasher or you're going to get a cold pre-fill and that's what those pods that you're throwing in there end up getting used. If you just toss them in, don't toss them into the bottom of the dishwasher. Put them in the dispenser. That's why the dispenser has slots in it
