But performance wise, it's close to m2pro or even better on single core, neutral engine, wtc
Choose wisely
Multi-core, which M3Pro are you comparing with, there are a lot of different MPRo chips on M3
same for GPU.
screen is the same. 120Hz but I think the nits is higher on the newer MPRo I thought.
I always upgrade because most of the time it's Single core performance usage I need
GPU also has enhancement so if you read the benchmarks, the M4PRo GPUx20 of them basically matched M1 Max's 32 GPUs, you have to look up M3Pro since I don't have those stats handy.
"Pro" doesn't mean better on a previous generation, you need to look at the total count.

By the spec sheet isn't the M3 MBP at microcenter a better deal if you ignore it being 1 year old?

Either machine will perform the "same" for you.
but if you want to do some homework.
You need to look at the Specs THEN also consider the chip performance.
10 CPUs vs 11 CPUS but M4 is 20% faster so does single core matter to you? Are you going to push multi-core performance? If you are asking this then it should not matter to you between 11 CPUs vs. 10 GPUs.
There are also Performance Core count vs Efficient Core count You have to do your research because no one knows what you really need. If you are just looking at the count then you will likely be doing a random pick. 4P 6E on M4. 5P/6E on M3Pro. Will it matter to you? I doubt it but I'd pick 4 faster cores myself because I want single app performance the POP faster and I will not stress all of the CPUs. I stress my GPUs so I opted for the MPro M4 14/20GPUs model but I do have Base M4 in my Mac Mini M4 and it runs just fine.

Again, if you are not sure, I'd suggest M4 and it would be good enough faster than any Windows machine you'd run on the app basis (not counting games since that's different). Specs lean more on M4's even on the base to me but you may be lured by the older GPU with 16 cores or the 2 extra GB of ram which won't matter for day to day.
I can't remember the external display differences, you can do some research here or someone here may help you.
Apple M3 Pro 11-Core CPU; 18GB Unified Memory; 512GB Solid State Drive; 14-Core GPU
Base M4 is 10 CPUs, 16GB RAM, same disk and 10-core GPU
I don't play games so I don't care about GPU but GPU is faster as well. You need to go research benchmarks to see if it matters to you but M4 chips are faster than M4 chips and you need to see if the extra core count matters to you
disk = same
memory, 2GB isn't gonna matter
screen is the same.
both space black.
both TB4. I got TB5 but I'll never leverage that speed.
Apple M4 10-Core Chip

Google Chrome is a massive memory hog, although, really, if you have enough free disk space it doesn't matter that a bunch of that memory will page off to the SSD. Even if you are an Adderall addict who "needs" fifty open browser tabs at once, you can't see them all at the same time anyway.
So if you want to keep your machine longer, try Safari or Firefox instead of Chrome and limit the number of open tabs to a reasonable amount.
Do not by 24gb air. Might as well get the better pro with 24gb. 16gb should be fine for you. I used 8gb. 16gb and now 24. Do I need it. Not everyday and I
always close all chrome windows. No tab left behind ! lol
I run Bambu studio. I don't run fusion or anything like that but I suspect 16gb is more than enough.
I can close my apps. I am not one of those who won't close down apps. lol
Air should always min spec imo.
I also just did a quick look on my RAM usage. I don't reboot my machine my machine is very fast still. M4 MPro 24GB.
Docker and VMWARE was taking 9GB each and it's basically 1.5GB to 4GB usually max when I'm using it "fresh", I was using about 9GB of Swap on SSD. Machine is flying still because memory speed is fast enough for any real paging to occur.
I restarted both and Docker dropped to 1.5GB and Vmware booted up to 8GB again (Windows sucks).
chrome = 0 because I only 1 tab running.
Basic info from this quick look on a 24GB machine, restart apps there will all have some memory leak or file paging so just restart if you are worried because some apps will always chew thru RAM after a while.
