Heard the game is just middle of the road, but all the reviews give it a 9?

I loved this game. It's a great old-school RPG. The combat is like Super Mario RPG, where you can time your hits to keep the attack going. The story is great, and it's actually a pretty long game (depending on how much you do). I did almost everything (I still need to play it again to clean up a trophy or two that I can't just go back and grab) and I got about 50 hours out of it. For me, it's worth full price, just to support this dev.

It's a great game if you like old-school RPGs that are along the lines of Super Mario RPG. It deserved all the 9s it got.

I don't have it, but I can't stand JRPG and anything with 1980s graphics. The worst game I ever played was Person 5. I stopped after a while because I cannot stand games like that. I tried a Final Fantasy, same garbage. Give me Fallout, Elden Ring, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn and any open world fully non-liner. That's what I look for in a game. If someone can suggest games like that, you have my gratitude.
You must be 15 that cant appreciate old school Jrpg. Final fantasy 6, fantasy star 4, crono triger, xenogear, zelda link to the past. Just to name a few.

It takes a special type of person to see a game you don't like, go into the comments to blatantly shit on it, and then try to act like you are only asking for recommendations.

I really enjoyed the game. The story is different but not unfamiliar either. The humor pokes fun at the genre but isn't overly silly. People might say it is middle of the road because it is a good game but not mind-blowing.

I platinum trophied the game, which is unusual for me. It kept me coming back.

I prefer the Switch version because I think games like this are best played when not tethered to the couch/TV

I loved it. If you like 16-bit era RPGs, I'd recommend giving it a shot. Even if you don't, give it a shot 😊
It's also worth noting this game was made by a small, indie game dev (Sabotage Studios). I don't make it a point to seek out indie games, and I don't typically play very many. But this job was excellently done, and I enjoyed it all the more knowing it was done by a small, passionate group.

Wow. Well, now everyone knows who not to take advice from on games. You have some questionable taste if you think Persona 5 is bad.
