Or you can get a 14" M4 Macbook Pro with 24gb ram + 512gb ssd for $1699.

What a massive divide.

The year is 1998 and my PC has 512MB and it was the shit then. Now in 2024 I have a measly 94GB of RAM.

Debating between this laptop vs
https://slickdeals.net/f/17977545-lenovo-thinkpad-p16s-laptop-ryzen-7-pro-7840u-16-3840x2400-oled-64gb-ram-1tb-1029?attrsrc=Thread%3AExpired%3ATrue&src=SiteSearchV2Algo
$1400 out the door for the p16. Missed out on the $1029 deal.

- AMD vs Intel (comparison looks almost the same)

- 64 vs 96 gb RAM — 64 will suffice but 96 is amazing , esp for future proofing.

- 4K screen (60hz) vs 3k IPS (120Hz)— not sure whats better for software dev, reading. I believe IPS is better but 4k(oled) is good for multimedia but you have the risk for oled burn in.

- 14.5" vs 16" screen — 16" is better for my usecase.

Thoughts?

I have same laptop 96GB RAM but with Ryzen, and I can assure you it can run more than 200 chrome and firefox tabs.

Well...64 vs 96gb of ram is kinda ridiculous unless you're actively needing that much ram for projects. The machine will be a doorstop before that much ram is normalized in everyday use.

AMD vs Intel -- personally, it kinda doesn't matter to me. Intel has had so many issues behind the scenes, I'd rather throw my hat in with AMD if given equal choice. Plus everything Intel I've had in the past 5+ years has been running HOT. Anything AMD has been fine. This may not be the case with this machine.

For reading text, I'd go with IPS all day long. OLEDs have great color but with static text, they're not as great. They are getting better. If you're doing video, OLED is a joy to work with.

14 vs 16: If you're not carrying it around all the time, then I'd almost always go bigger. Unless you can clearly articulate "ugh, that'd be a burden to haul around", then you'll get a better experience with a bigger, better unit.

Lenovo needs to start making their bezels thinner. So far only the current X1 carbons have thin bezels
