I have been using the Babbel app(lifetime), Babbel live(classes), and comprehensible input for the past year. I have tried to pick up Spanish in the past with duolingo and rosetta stone(I have lifetime) to no avail. I am at an intermediate level in Spanish now with Babbel and input. Babbel the app is good. It is much better than duolingo and rosetta stone. You need to use it in conjunction with some input method like dreaming spanish or refold. Comprehensible input is something that you need to do to get immersion at the same time. Reading in the language is also needed at a certain level.

Babbel did just add AI to their app. It allows you to have short conversations in your target language with the AI for different situations like ordering dinner or getting directions. This is at least true for Spanish. I am unsure about AI exercises in other languages but I assume that they have it or it is in the works. They are constantly adding features to the app so it is worth the lifetime subscription if you are wanting an app. Live is more expensive but you get 2 free classes I think with your lifetime app subscription to try it out. Live classes are actually pretty good. They now offer private classes as well if you subscribe to live.

I have tried the app in airplane mode and it does appear to work offline. Truthfully I use the web version at my computer most of the time.
You can probably get this free from your local library digitally.
I was shown the code LEARN2025 on StackSocial which lowered it another $40 to $89.95

Has anyone tried Babbel for a lifetime subscription? Curious if it's worth it for $138.99—how does it compare to free apps like Duolingo? Thinking about using it for Spanish or French!

Just checked the Hoopla app and yep there are audiobooks to learn other languages. Didn't check the Libby app but bet there would be the same. These won't be interactive though like apps made just for learning.

Looks like stack social may have a discount on many things at the moment. Went down a rabbit hole of looking at various offerings on there. Wondering if anyone has found something particularly useful that they've purchased. Saw some lifetime cloud storage, password managers, AI relates stuff, various Microsoft products...

And all rated well which had me suspicious.

Just curious, with the development of AI like ChatGPT, very likely we'll have very cheap real time translation within a few years. Any reason to spend time learning a second language?

I just asked ChatGPT and it said there are lots of benefits to learning a new language, not the least of which: delaying the onset of dementia, cultural awareness, and better communication skills.

If you are asking for a reason, then you must go walk home alone after the bar closes
