Start with fiberglass paddles. Pretty inexpensive for a set and lighter than wooden paddles.

I agree! You can find fiberglass sets for around $12-$15 if you filter by price on amazon

These are heavy as hell and completely made of wood. Maybe buy these for children but these will last about one game before you realize you need to buy a real pickleball paddle.

I bought this and I went from a 3.0 to a 4.25 within a month.

Imagine if you built the paddle by hand from wood, you will reach 10 in no time!

These will be pretty discouraging for children and probably even not safe due to the weight. The significantly higher swing weight of wooden paddles can put a lot of strain on the wrist, and maybe worse for children without enough strength.

Skip these wooden ones all together. In fact, don't even get them if they were passing them out for free. They'll just discourage you from the game because they're that bad. Get a set of fiberglass ones for about $15-$20 on Amazon, or go straight to AliExpress and get a starter set of carbon paddles for around $20

Plywood garbage. If you're serious about playing be prepared to spend a hundred or so on a carbon fiber paddle.

No need to spend 100 to start, but know that after you play more than 6 months you'll probably consider something in the 100-200 range for a paddle. Here's a crash course for some paddles:

Best starter set: Friday pickleball. The 2 pack for 100 is one of the best starter options.. they have a 100 day return policy as well that may help,

Best starter paddle: the 11six24 jellybean blemish sale for 60 bucks they do occasionally is really great, and would last you a bit longer than the Friday would

Best upgraded starter: vatic saga flash (100 bucks)

I've been an ambassador for bread & butter for a bit now too and really like all of their offerings. They are a bit more expensive to start, but also they have great service and the love it policy for 30 day returns even if it's been played with... They are a little pricier at 140-170 shipped, feel free to reach out for a code.

Go with a friend. Borrow a paddle and see if you like pickleball in general. Then if you want to commit spend that money for a cheap carbon fiber one. That'll hold you over for 6 months or even a year as you're refining your skills. A cheap paddle you'll outgrow easily in a month. The cheap ones bounce funny, they don't grip the ball, and don't have good of control.

Or go out a few times with a friend to try out pickleball.

I disagree with the "real sport" comment too. It's easy enough to play and hard enough to master. You can play mostly anywhere with any age and you can burn 1000 calories so easy.

Ouch.

Look, just because a game is only played by people under 25 and over 65 doesn't mean it isn't a real sport

Also looking to get started now that my city has turned every single open space into a pickleball court. At least when the fad dies, I'm only out $50-$100 and not millions of taxpayer dollars...I say that only half-jokingly as a former daily racquetball player.
