My mistake on the previous post. Reference below is for 10th gen. The deal is for gen11th.

i5-10400

The comparable would be the latest price on the thread below:

i5-11400F (no graphic version)
https://slickdeals.net/f/16336807-intel-core-i5-11400f-6-core-2-6ghz-lga-1200-desktop-processor-121-free-shipping

I pulled a trigger yesterday when it was ~$89 but it's even cheaper now.
Older model but if you have an old motherboard that can take only 11th gen, this is a good deal.

Please be gentle as this is my first post.

This is without a doubt a solid price on an Intel CPU. The only real ding, as is often the case with Intel CPU deals, is identifying the discount motherboard with which this could be paired if you don't already have a compatible system.

Thanks for linking to the other thread, since a lot of the discussion there would be just as relevant for this CPU. Just as with that offer, this one's value is bolstered by the inclusion of a heatsink. Unfortunately for anyone building from scratch, the best motherboard deat for new/retail would probably be around $80-90. At the same time, if you're trying to upgrade a system to qualify for that automatic upgrade to Windows 11 (I've personally still got a couple of PCs in this camp) and you want to stick to team blue (this is not the case for me - I'm just looking for the slickest deal) this could be a solid way to swap in CPU, motherboard and potentially RAM for around the $200 price point.

Good luck!
Jon

I know their price per share seems cheap, but Their books don't look very good, I'd get out at first chance you get

Thanks for sharing, this is a great deal. They are trying to sell used 11400Fs for more than $80 on eBay and this one is brand new with an igpu. I ordered one to upgrade the i3 10105 in my HTPC media rig. This will extend its life another 2 years.

honestly that i3 should have been more than enough for an HTPC. whens the last time you reinstalled windows?

I also have an i3-10105 system. As tempting as this is, I'm in no way dissatisfied with the quad-core.

For HTPC you are getting AV1 hardware decode with the 11400. Not sure why the system couldn't last 10 years though?

Deal seems dead, I'm seeing over $160.

Wanted a cheap plex server with QuickSync so thought this would work for me but, no reliable source for cheap motherboards unfortunately. Also after taking a look the i3-14100 might be a better fit.

If you have a microcenter near you an i3-14100 which has less cores but, from what I can tell is still faster, is only $99 and has much better motherboard availability at less than $20 more.

Was looking at old Dell workstations but, its a hassle to transplant them to a standard ATX case so I can get more HDD bays. Frown

Otherwise a good deal if you are rocking an 10th/11th gen i3 for some reason and want a reasonable upgrade.

FWIW if (IF) you can get a cheaper motherboard, pairing this with something like a 6700XT will still give you a ton of bang for your buck for a few more years.

I wasn't encouraged by the bargain LGA 1700 motherboard availability at Micro Center, but did find plenty of retail/new options online for around $80.

Was this because of the motherboards having integrated front inputs, or more an issue with those systems that still utilized BTX-style designs?

Good luck!

Right now the 12400 is on sale via Woot for $120. Forty dollars more but it may be worth it if you're considering a new budget build on the LGA 1700 platform… Plus board availability is much better than the 11th gen at the moment

Yeah from everything I see it just has different screw holes, proprietary connectors, etc and by the time I figure out how to adapt everything I would have lost my sanity to save maybe at most $100 (if that) since I would really just be harvesting the CPU and mobo as I would be supplying my own case, PSU, and HDDs and at the end it would still be hacked together. It's a good deal if you have the know how but, as I would be doing this at most once, the time and effort to figure it out just isn't worth it. I just wished Dell and HP and other OEMs just stick with the standards so there wouldn't be so much e-waste.

I think the market for those are people who just want to use it as-is in the case and slap a beefier GPU and maybe PSU in it. For that it really is a killer deal if you can live with an older generation CPU which for gaming doesn't really matter as much as the GPU.

Without a doubt, there are three possible approaches with those OEM desktop deals:
  1. Operate the system as a sealed box with limited to power-neutral upgrades for its lifetime (so only swapping in CPUs or GPUs which are supported within the existing power budget). This works for a large group of users and represents the target audience of such kinds of pre-builts.
  2. Be the kind of DIY-er who cuts into power supply wires, uses custom power supply wire harnesses, or runs dual power supplies in a PC as part of their GPU upgrade (nothing unimaginable, but definitely a niche group).
  3. Ignore highly custom OEM systems in favor of a PC which utilizes standardized motherboards and power supplies.

Good luck!
Jon
