Good article from Tom's Guide [tomsguide.com] about XBox, PS5, or dedicated 4K player. Sony has always been the defacto standard since DVD for creating and setting the standards and integrating into their systems from the PS2 onward. The DVD player in the PS2 is what brought in a good part of the DVD revolution from VHS in the early 2000s. There are lots of complaints it seems about XBox Series X having issues with 100GB triple-layer Blu-rays, which now constitute a growing percentage of 4K movies... so there's that issue. Neither XBS or PS5 support Dolby Vision, another growing standard in the HDR10+ & Dolby Vision enhanced 4K media. And dedicated Blu-ray & 4K players are just built to take advantage of your TV features and settings. As Tom's Guide puts it, XBS and PS5 are game systems first, and afterwards it'll try its best with your "Jurassic Park" Blu-ray.
Everything has a "next best thing" whether it's phones or computers or tvs. Even cars and houses. There is always going to be a something that is considered "better", you just have to find your level. There is no point getting bothered with that concept because it's just consumerism and that will never change. But you can find your personal level and be happy.

I have only 4k tvs, I have a 4k projector, I have 4k blu-ray players. However, I still collect dvds, Blu-ray's along with some 4ks. I always look up a 4k to see if the image quality is a big enough increase to support the higher price. Many times it's not. I have 4500 physical films and only like 150 4ks. There are tons of films that only have dvd releases. There are brand new films (such as 2024s challengers) that don't even release in 4k, only BR. But there are also 4k that come out that are worse than the blu-ray (such as Terminator 2).

If I've learned anything from my collecting it's that there will always be another movie to come out or a new technology that releases (8k tvs etc) but as long as you know your own limit you can be very happy and content without spending tons of money and time on the inevitable "next best thing"
Regular Blu-ray discs and DVDs are still releasing for most theatrical release movies. 4K discs are labeled as such and usually have black plastic cases. There is no 4K TV that would be incompatible with a 4K player. It could limit the quality of the visuals and audio.

I'm happy with both for different reasons. PS5 has exclusives but XBOX Gamepass is cool and I use it for Kodi. You can also find gamekeys often cheaper for Xbox. They're probanly the same/similar if used for Bluray player

Didn't have Cars 3 or Lightyear so why not at those prices. Grabbed Constantine as well. Great deal.

Why this comment is being downvoted is beyond me. It's stating a very important fact that neither system supports Dobly Vision.

Yes, it's inconvenient to own a dedicated UHD Blu-Ray player in addition to a gaming system, but you can't expect these systems to be more than a basic method to play Blu-Rays. They'll be fine for playing older HD Blu-Rays, but be found wanting with 4k material.

For Disney movies, you may or may not get digital with the package. If included, digital has a chance of being already used. It can be a crap shoot. I don't fault this with Hamilton Book. I had the same experience with the Disney Rewards program. I believe Disney re-shrinkwrap returned/used movies. Hamilton takes clearance/liquidated items from retailers for their online store. I remember seeing a lot of similar titles that Big Lots have in their bargain bin. It just looks like now they're getting leftovers from the Disney Rewards which was just discontinued.
Man, that's crazy, and not my experience at all with Disney Rewards, Disney Movie Club or Disney movies from Amazon (not that I'd put it past any studio). I have a embarrassing number of Disney movies on BD an UHD and have never had an issue redeeming codes.

Seriously. The Piano and Moonlight have scores of 7.5 and 7.4, respectively. I'd rather eat sand while having my prostate examined.

I think he's just saying he uses the XBOX for Kodi, nothing to do with Gamepass.

Some of the movies through the Disney Rewards program and Hamilton Books are not U.S. copies. They are not intended to come with digital copies or the digital copies only work from the correct region where the disc was intended to be sold. Otherwise, I have never had a problem with Disney digital copies.

Yes my point was they understand a dedicated 4k player is "better" than a dedicated game console that plays movie disc yet they keep asking if that's the case! 🤷🏻 ♂️

The irony is content has gotten better & they buy equipment to take advantage of it and the popular thing to do is pay to stream 4k content! 😋

I also find it funny people talking about waiting for "8K" and we can't even take full advantage of "4k" PQ now!

And sometimes, the movie or story doesn't need the 4k UHD ATMOS treatment to be enjoyable.

I totally agree. I mean id say most films don't need to be higher quality to enjoy. There are ones that definitely are. For instance I watched Dunkirk on Netflix in hd at one point. A few months later I got it on 4K and watched that and it was literally a completely different experience. It really matters what the director and cinematographer were envisioning when they made the project. Nolan shoots for the largest screen with the highest quality. Many incredible films are not shot that way so the upgrade to 4k can be rather pointless or even detrimental in some cases.

Count yourself lucky. I'm sure for the majority it's fine. I've seen others in the Reddit community who experienced the same as I and some worse (getting scratched discs). At least with Disney Rewards you can contact support & get a replacement (it's a hassle but the option is there). With Hamilton, they are not an authorized retailer according to Disney support, and Hamilton has a disclaimer regarding digital (they can't guarantee working code).

That is true. I buy a lot from Hamilton and sometimes check the back image of the movie it provides and compare the UPC online. Otherwise I don't care if they're non-US as long as they play in US players. For Disney Rewards program, though, I tend to believe they're all U.S. or Canadian (if not US) but all Region A compatible. Disney does provide replacement digital through their support. It's just that Hamilton is not considered an authorized retailer according to Disney support so you can't get a replacement code there.
I'm a regular customer of Hamilton Book so a missing/non-working code is not a big deal for a heavily discounted product. I just want to set the right expectation.
