The main advantage of pods is portability. If you wash your clothes away from home (laundromat, apartment building basement washers, etc) it'd a lot more convenient to bring a small baggie with a few pods than a heavy jug of detergent.
Personally I buy these for my kids to use for laundry at college, or when we're on vacation in a place we're doing laundy (although I prefer the all-powder packs as I try to avoid packing any liquids during travel)

I've been using these, form another deal, and they're fine in my HE machine, nothing to write home about, it's detergent. What I don't like is the child-resistant slider on the top of the bag, which is a little hard to use but not a deal breaker. I get whatever's cheap when I need it, or stock up a little when there's a deal, and just bought a bunch of sheets from a Woot deal, so I'd say at 13.5 cents apiece these are alright, but stick with whatever you're comfortable with. I liked the old Arm & Hammer powder packs when they went on sale for like 8 cents apiece, but I think those days are gone.
