Imo one of the greatest films ever. This movie is about Peking Opera it also shows the rigorous training these people go through. To put this in context Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung went to Peking Opera school. They are not martial artists, they took their Peking Opera skills and adapted them to screen creating much of the martial arts and stunts in their films. If you like this also check out "To Live" by Zhang Yimou, it's not Peking opera but about pupppeteering through war ridden China.
One of my all-time faves. It's an epic that follows 3 people through 20th-century China, and shows how the socio-political factors of the times affected their relationship. I asked for & received this for Christmas. Criterion version features (from the Criterion website):

- New 4K digital restoration of the original director's cut, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
- One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features
- New conversation between Chinese cultural studies scholar Michael Berry and film producer Janet Yang
- Documentary from 2003 on the making of the film
- Interview from 1993 with director Chen Kaige conducted by journalist Charlie Rose
- Trailer
- New English subtitle translation
- PLUS: An essay by author and scholar Pauline Chen
Classic film. Amazing price. This is a steal!

Such a shame we'll probably never see movies like these coming out of China anymore...

Not that this isn't a good deal for the Criterion, but if you haven't seen this yet and are just curious about it (like me), you can watch this for free on Kanopy.

I'm guessing you're on the younger side, or very old, but when this came out in the early '90s it was well recognized. Not blockbuster big, of course. But big in a way very few foreign films were at the time. Even in my podunk rural Alabama high school, it made it on my radar.

There were actually quite a few really good films from China from the late '80s through the '90s. That all but ended in early '00s as new tech giants became the primary backers of films and the government took a bigger role in the industry. Sadly, because of this, most modern Chinese movies suck.

Wow, impressive deal. Not often an old classic film gets noticed.
