You will probably still be disappointed. The rule of thumb is stick to the even number star trek movies. The Odds are all duds
I watched this in my 20s, and it is just bad. REALLY boring as you said. The focus was more on showcasing special effects (of the time) than story telling.
If you want to rewatch to confirm your suspicions, just stream it on paramount+. Not worth spending $12 on it.

Robert Wise was a master filmmaker; Freddie Francis' anamorphic cinematography was golden; the formal tone of this film makes all the rest look like cowboys & indians; and given that this was a symphonic visual tone poem rather than an action flick, Jerry Goldsmith's score was of course the best Trek ever got. This edition debuted weirdly on Paramount+ in 4K HDR exclusively, but it's nice now not to have to rely on my subscription for this (and to get the higher bitrate on fixed media). All in.

Agreed. Saw it opening night in 1979. The beginning of an entire franchise spanning decades. Too cerebral for most. Yes, it has its flaws but is an ambitious film regardless. Always enjoy watching.

This appears to be the 4K Ultra HD version, which is the same as Wise's 2001 Director's Cut, but with extensive HD restoration and SPX upgrades done a few years ago.
