Maybe a stupid question.. but is this a game you can enjoy standalone, having never played a Persona game? (like a Final Fantasy game, where you can play just about any game and not have to worry about the previous ones?), or is it a tied-in sequel to the others in any way?

Yeah, each game in the persona series is a self-contained story with no reference to the others. Additionally while the "Persona" mechanics are similar the context is a little different.
Its good. Its definitely the weakest of the modern series, but like in comparing ROTJ to ESB. Depending on who you ask, I have friends that liked 3 more than 5.

Definitely not a stupid question. As Nathan mentioned, they're standalone games. It*helps* if you have previous experience, but it's not at all required. I think Persona 3 was my first Persona game and I recently bought Reload and I'm glad that I did. It really is a stellar game. And if it grabs you I highly recommend 5 also.

The time sink for $25 is hard to beat as well. Aside from sim games with no real end RPGs are the way to go for dollar to hour value. At around 30 hours in the game I only have the first part of the second block of the "maze" (no spoilers) opened... and I believe there are four blocks. It's a lot!

Persona 3 would have been the entry point for most. The earlier ones didn't initially leave Japan

I've never played the original Persona 3, but I got the platinum trophy on this. It's a great game. 5 and 4 are still better, to me, but this is still great. It's easily worth $25. It's worth full price.

Definitely. Persona is just like FF in this regard.

I keep seeing P3R for cheap prices like this, this may even be the lowest but I still recommend not even bothering until they bundle the base game with the DLC like they do for EVERY. SINGLE. GAME.

Persona 3 -> FES or Portable
Persona 4 -> Golden
Catherine -> Full Body
Persona 5 -> Royal
Persona 3R -> ???

Just wait until they release a "complete" version of it. Who knows, it might even include FeMC by then since there was great demand for it.
