So, yeah...

Was just about to order, thanks for surfacing the potential health impact.

If traditional car air fresheners such as these are no-go, then what are some safe(r) alternatives that also smell good?

Probably a box of baking soda with some essential oils.

I'd wash whatever is making the smell. Soap and water. Ammonia OR bleach (but never both!). Then baking soda to absorb smell.

Somebody mentioned essential oils, though they can cause allergic reactions. I'm not a fan of covering up smells. I was in an airbnb that covered light mold smells in some places with heavy essential oils. I was not a fan. I put the oils outside until we left.

Those are not safe either

These highly concentrated and potent essential oils can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The inhalation of VOCs commonly has negative effects on the respiratory system. Individuals can have different reactions to essential oils, just like they might to other medicines, products, allergens or irritant triggers.

Ray Zalinsky: Went a little heavy on the pine tree perfume there, kid?

Tommy: Sir, it's a taxicab air freshener.

Ray Zalinsky: Good, you've pinpointed it. Step two is washing it off.
