Bought this last time it was on sale. Makes for decent tunafish sandwiches after draining most of the water.

At this price, just had an idea....

Making homemade tuna-based cat food that is nutritionally complete requires adding ingredients that provide essential nutrients your cat needs. Tuna alone is not enough because it lacks certain vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are essential for a cat's health. Here's a simple guide on how to create a balanced, nutritious meal for your cat using a can of tuna:

Basic Recipe for Tuna-Based Homemade Cat Food

Ingredients:

1 can of tuna in water (not oil)

1/4 teaspoon of taurine supplement (essential amino acid for cats, often sold as a powder)

1/4 teaspoon of fish oil (provides omega-3 fatty acids)

1/2 teaspoon of calcium carbonate or egg shell powder (to provide calcium, which is necessary for bone health)

1/8 teaspoon of potassium chloride (to provide potassium)

1/8 teaspoon of salt (to help with electrolyte balance, but don't overdo it)

1 tablespoon of pumpkin puree or sweet potato puree (for fiber and digestive health; optional)

1/4 teaspoon of vitamin E oil (to support skin and coat health; optional)

Instructions:

1. Drain the Tuna: Open the can of tuna and drain the water. Make sure you're using tuna in water, not oil, as oil can upset your cat's digestive system.

2. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the tuna with the supplements and additives. Stir everything thoroughly to make sure it's evenly distributed.

3. Serve: Serve the mixture as a meal. Store the rest in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.

Important Nutritional Additives:

Taurine: Cats are obligate carnivores and must get taurine, an essential amino acid, from their diet. Without it, cats can develop serious health issues, like heart disease and vision problems.

Fish Oil: This adds omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for coat health and inflammation reduction.

Calcium: Cats need calcium to maintain bone health, which can be lacking if they don't consume bones. Using calcium carbonate or ground eggshells is a good way to meet this need.

Potassium: Essential for muscle function and overall cellular processes.

Important Notes:

Consult a Veterinarian: Before making homemade food for your cat, it's highly recommended to consult with your veterinarian. They can help you ensure the recipe meets your cat's individual dietary needs.

Variety: This tuna-based meal should be just one part of a varied diet. You can alternate with other protein sources like chicken, beef, or turkey to provide a well-rounded nutrition plan.

Commercial Supplements: There are also complete and balanced commercial cat food supplements available that you can add to homemade food to ensure your cat gets all the necessary nutrients. These often come in powder or paste form.

Avoid These Ingredients:

Onions, garlic, or chives: Toxic to cats, even in small amounts.

Dairy: Many cats are lactose intolerant, so avoid adding dairy products.

Excessive Salt: Too much salt can lead to kidney problems and dehydration.

By adding the right supplements, you can make a nutritious and balanced tuna-based meal for your cat. If you plan to prepare homemade food regularly, always ensure your cat is receiving all the essential vitamins and minerals required for long-term health.
