Figure that a good deal from LAX to NRT is $500-ish. A flight from NRT to CTS is about $150-$200 on a decent airline--taking the rail would be more expensive from tokyo to sapporo.
I suppose if you figure in United/ANA is a mid-tier airline and the sub $500 flights are usually on budget airlines like zipair.

ANA economy is really great. Flew with a family of 5 last summer and we felt really well taken care of. The Honolulu to LAX leg with United was terrible though.
Why? ANA is great airline
Ana is great but United is awful. Make sure you book only on ana metal.
