How does this compare to the $50 Yamaha refurb @ Brandsmart?

From what I can tell, the JBL does not have a subwoofer-out should you decide you want more bass vs the Yamaha that does.

I don't recommend yamaha. There is lot of distortion with inbuilt subwoofer. And also it misses high frequency sounds and noticeable while playing music. If you buy yamaha then get wired subwoofer.

"two full range drivers, two 2.5" woofers, a built-in subwoofer for deep bass and Dolby digital"

I've been using the Yamaha about a week now, and I think it sounds fantastic with surprising amounts of bass. Absolutely worth the $50. Came with the remote, and an optical audio cable as well.

On paper the JBL and Yamaha seem similar. I went with the JBL from Walmart so if it isn't good I can easily return it in store.

Audio Specifications

JBL (Walmart clearance $63)
Total speaker power 110W
2 x 27W + 56W woofer
2 x 2.25" cones + 2 x 2.5" woofers
Frequency response 40Hz - 20KHz

Yamaha (Brandsmart refurb $50)
Total speaker power 120 W
2 x 30W + 60W woofer
2.125" cone × 2, Tweeter: 1" dome × 2, Woofer: 3" cone × 2
Frequency response: 62 Hz to 23 kHz

Tweeter domes 5 kHz to 23 kHz
Front cones 170 Hz to 22 kHz
Sub cones 62 Hz to 170 Hz

OK the speaker arrived today. The higher end range sounds very good. Very good. Vocals are nice and clear. There is some good separation too.

There is a good deal of bass but I find mids and lows to be boxy and and the lows a bit boomy. There are several sound settings, (vocal, news, music, movies) and it seems like the "news" or "music" settings to me are the best setting without too much boxy bass.

BTW the woofers are on the bottom of the bar, which IMO further hampers the bass. So although the soundbar has feet that lift it up 1/4" off the table, I'd recommend elevating it an inch or two off the table with spacers or something (that's what I did), or even wall mounting it.

If this speaker were for me, it's not bad, but I might not keep it. But it's only $63 and it's for a friend on a budget, so they can decide for themselves. But is a good buy at $60? I'd say so.
