I'd recommend buying one of these direct from Sonos to trial. Pretty sure they give you 90 days and you can always find a deal elsewhere in the end. I did this a couple years back to test the Beam Gen 2 and this Arc. Ended up keeping the Beam Gen 2. Better dialog clarity, almost as good overall sound, half the price and size. If you don't like either you could go the component route.
Amp and speaker for sure. Soundbar is if you have space constraints or you don't want large speakers in your living room.

Or just the hassle of correctly running wires everywhere….IE simplicity and form factor

For this price, you can scour FB Marketplace and piece yourself a pretty high end setup that is more versatile than this - it will just look uglier than this, if that's something you care about.

If you feel that your roommates, spouse, SOs, children, or others can successfully navigate what buttons to press when to get this that or the other setting in an amp setup, amp can likely exceed a soundbar (depending on selection of components).

If you just never want to fuss with help those folks above just watch a movie, soundbars make it easy (when combined with ARC/eARC.)

Pretty much every semi-modern receiver has ARC/eARC as well, so really it is just a question of space and aesthetics.

I would add and simplify it.
If you're gonna mainly stream, soundbar is probably the better choice.
If not, then are you willing to go through the "hassle" for a proper setup to make it worthwhile.
If not then a soundbar might still be the better option.

no, its still a big question on ease of setup. a receiver has more ports and room for errors for people to plug in. i've seen people plug into rears but place the speakers next to the tv. and if you want rears, you're either running wires around the room or you're spending more on another wireless amp.
if you want best sound, sure thats receiver. if you want ease of use, soundbar. maybe a middle ground is the sony quads but thats pricey.

Another concern to add: will Sonos be around in a year to support the app/ecosystem? Their recent earnings call was… not good.

In any dire scenario, someone will buy them out for the customer base and patent.

I'd default to sound bar unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Ease of use/simplicity/aesthetics is underrated for products and is one of the reasons Apple has done so well as a company despite not offering the most cutting edge all the time.
