NEVERMIND, sometime in the last month SK finally released a firmware update that fixes this (after years of not addressing it!)
You can download it at the bottom of http://ssd.skhynix.com or follow this guide from a redditor https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmaster..._thank_me/
UPDATE: (After years of sk not addressing the issue, they released new firmware for the platinum p41 http://ssd.skhynix.com, apperantly fixes the issue)
Do not buy this, the cache has an issue that causes a massive drop in write speeds (from around 6000 mbps down to 2000) most likely due to a firmware issue that has not been resolved since the drive has been released. Here is one example and you can find many others just like it https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmaster...led_after/

If you plan on using it as a game/ secondary drive its not bad but at this price and with the lack of a fix I really find it hard to recommend. I personally have one and have replaced it with a 990 pro, it is now my (expensive) secondary drive.
To give some credit where credit is due, I've been using the P41 drive since it released and it's been great. I've been using it as a Windows OS drive and it's only about a quarter full (less than 500GBs) and have never experienced the slower writing issue. So not saying the issue doesn't happen, as it clearly is a problem, but you might be fine especially with the recent firmware release.

That said, between all the NVME drives I've tried:

Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
Samsung 990 Pro 4TB
Samsung PM981 1TB
SK Hynix P31 1TB
SK Hynix P31 2TB
SK Hynix P41 1TB
SK Hynix P41 2TB
Team Group T-Force Z4 2TB
Team Group MP44 1TB
Crucial P3 Plus 1TB

You likely won't be able to tell the difference with everyday use outside of using benchmark tools or potentially using specific intense writing for professional work like video editing. So if you need a decent 2TB NVME drive now, this isn't bad at the current price. Or you could wait for another deal on the Samsung 990 Pros to drop below $150

I refuse to Trust Hynix again, after how long they took for the firmware fix, and they haven't even released fix for the p44 pro, same damn drive.

It also may not even be a complete fix.

I just did the firmware update on both my 2TB drives and it's not dipping below 5k under any load. Huge W!

Is this single or double sided? How does the heat production compare to the gen 3 sk hynix gold that was supposedly the gold standard of coolness and low power? I have an m.2 slot in my laptop that's open, but the shallow depth makes it so double sided or needing it's own heat sink won't fit. It's a gen 3 slot, so I'm not going to get the fast speeds and would prefer to avoid heat that'll just throttle the cpu and bottle neck the gpu.

Ya same here. I will only buy Samsung from now on. The irony is that the 980 Pro was having issues when I bought the P41 rofl

This is why I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Solidigm 2TB drive for 65$ a little over a year ago 😞

Nope, I don't trust samsung either, they're pretty awful with firmware problems as well on their flagship.

Western digital is the only reliable brand right now, not the best performance, but no major hiccups. nod

It's single sided. It should run cooler in a gen 3 slot, as I had one in a gen 3 slot before, but it'll still run hotter than a typical gen 3 NVME drive like a P31 gold. I didn't measure it often, but it could still reach about +70C for intense reading and writing activity, but that was rarely the case. It usually ran around 35-42C in my computer, but it did have a heatsink. The P31 2TB on the other hand was around 5-15C cooler on average.

No brand is immune from problems. The WD Blue SA510 had serious reliability issues. Then there's the whole Windows update HMB fiasco. Those are just the recent ones I can think of off the top of my head.

HBM is window's fault.

I'm not saying WD is immune, but they didn't experience any crazy outsized technical failures.

Samsung routinely borks their drives, multiple times now, FLAG SHIP products, 950 970, 980pro, are you kidding me, clearly that department is either unfocused and/or incompetent.

I run Linux and Phoronix tested the Samsung 980 PRO and 990 PRO and confirmed they have problems when using Linux, specifically with Linux file systems.

I'm running a WD SN850X 1 TB and it's been great. I was going to replace it with a 850X 2 TB and use the older one for my secondary NVMe, but prices went way up.

I had looked at the P41 before getting the 805X and just saw this listing and the specs look good. The firmware issue and dying drives convinced me to wait on a sale on the 2 TB 850X. Linux users need to be aware of the Samsung issues.

I don't remember the exact details but I'm under the impression that the HMB issue wasn't really due to a flaw in Windows. I believe the Windows update allowed drives to use a larger amount of memory for HMB. The firmware in the WD drives attempted to do so but it resulted in serious issues. If my understanding is correct, I believe WD deserves the blame. And trust me, I'd love nothing more than to blame it on MS.

Also, I'd classify the issues with the WD Blue SA510 as "crazy outsized technical failures." I think the only reason it didn't get more attention is because they weren't released until SATA drives had started falling out of favor, coupled with the fact that that model was/is seriously overpriced.

Firmware update tool only available in Windows? I only have Mac and use P41 for external NVME.
