I just use Windows Defender. If I think I might have a problem, I'll install the free Malware Bytes and run a scan. Virus Total is free and checks any specious files. I also block all ads on both my phone and PC via DNS filtering, patched applications and FireFox extensions. I can't tell you the last time I've seen an actual ad. The internet looks terrible when I use someone else's phone/PC and those adverts often lead to questionable websites. However, I have yet to be infected in 25 years of downloading off the internet. The secret is to be aware of what and where you are downloading. It helps I have a firm understanding of IT.
