Woot! has the Woot! Appsclusive Refurbished HP M01-F4019 Desktop Computer Intel 14th Gen Core i7-14700 Up To 5.4GHz 16GB DDR4 1TB SSD Windows 11 Home for $449.99. Order using the Woot app for an additional $15 off today 3/29 only, making total before tax $434.99. Shipping is free with Amazon Prime, otherwise $6 per order.

This 20-core CPU alone is bringing $300+. DDR4 RAM on this one, so not the current DDR5 spec. Looks to be missing USB-C, which may be a deal breaker for some. Comprehensive specs are posted on Best Buy's website:

Not sure why all the TDs. Excellent value for a current gen i7 power-user desktop / workstation.

When you can buy a desktop like this with a warranty for way less than it would cost for used components to build it, that's always a good value. The behavior and mentality of many here seems to be in decline. You try to help them save money and they come after you as thanks. I appreciate your comment.

a bit of a lottery or gamble with this being used/refurbished.

-is the bios/firmware updated to remediate the problem with 13th/14th gen Intel cpus?
-when was the bios/firmware updated?
-and how heavily was it used before the update?

also, how is the cooling? traditionally these HP's in this formfactor don't have the best airflow and cooling. the i7-14700 may be baking like a potato in this setup.

It's not even current-gen, that'd be the Core Ultra 200 series, though with their lackluster performance bump it's no wonder it didn't blip your radar. Most of the fear would be of degradation issues in the 13- and 14-series caused by voltage spikes, now mitigated with updates but at a performance hit, and with older chips pre-update potentially having suffered irreversible damage.

The psu is not standard. It means that you won't be able to upgrade the gpu.

That's become the norm with home/office desktops from HP and others. There are likely low powered GPU options, but you'll face hurdles trying to make a gaming PC out of one of these. Although in another thread a member upgraded the OEM HP PSU with a higher output HP OEM one he found on eBay that I think had the video card power harness. This was on a TP01 series, which I believe uses the same power supplies.

Yeah, those barely blipped my radar. Those are not marketed as i7 series though, and we haven't even seen mainstream desktops with this newest family of CPUs.

It's not a good platform for making a gaming system for the reasons already started, the CPU is power hungry while also being power limited since it's not a k SKU, it's not particularly cheap, it almost certainly doesn't support ECC RAM, the iGPU isn't particularly special, and this isn't particularly cheap for a low end NAS.

This probably isn't a bad product, but I am struggling to figure out for whom this might be a good value at this price.

An office pro who's on the computer all day doing data entry, books, MS Office, online research, generating quotes, etc. sounds like the niche for this one. It's sure to be lightning fast with gobs of multitasking going on, and for that duty you could easily spend double and not get as good performance. Seems like overkill for a home office, but overkill at purchase does mean a longer useful life. A RAM upgrade (if possible; I haven't checked) would bring it into CAD and database work pretty readily. But yeah this one has its limitations for much else in spite of the $400+ price tag. It's sorta like an 80s Corvette; it will go plenty fast but you can't do much else with it.

Same unit bein sold on Walmart for $469 with $85 for 4 year warranty. Worth paying for the additional insurance? Woot has warranty for 90 days but no experience dealing with them for warranty claims.

Woot is good about backing what they sell, but yeah the 90 days is a bit short for a PC. I've never had many under warranty failures on new or refurb stuff, so it's not on my radar. I also never buy extended warranties and no telling how many thousands that's saved me over the years.

The 90 days is a long enough shakedown period to get all your software and files loaded and put some serious use on it. If there are no issues in that period you're probably good for years if you give it some stable power and surge protection. My guess would be less than 2% failure rate within the first 5 years. Before spinning drives were replaced with SSDs I would have projected failure rate at 15-20% in the first 5 years, with the vast majority of that being drive failures.

Those who want to spend a little more and get the longer warranty, I totally get it. I repair my own stuff so I pocket that extended warranty money as it's not a good investment in my case. It's also worth mentioning that every time you buy an extended warranty somebody makes a fat profit, which should tell you the value you're getting.

"HDMI Out, and VGA port" - omg, no DP? Walmart page shows it is "1 VGA; 1 HDMI-out 1.4b". omg, it is 1.4. Doesnt even support 4k@60hz. Is it upgradable to get a GC installed to support 2 4K@60hz monitors? PSU is only 180w.
