The subs are expensive because they're 1/2 Sonos networking components and 1/2 huge driver. Regular subs don't have to deal with the networking stuff. Being able to plug the thing in anywhere without having to run wiring is the selling point.
That being said, there is a hack for a DIY Sonos sub- get a IKEA SYMFONISK speaker for $120 or less, wire your existing generic subwoofer to the speaker in it, and you'll have some extra rumble added to your Sonos setup. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiPPPu7

They are being discontinued, with the Arc Ultra as its successor.

Lmao now that's some honesty right there
I've read some hyperbolic comments on SD that say the ultra is so above and beyond the old Arc that you don't even need a subwoofer and the old Arc is trash
Thanks, will wait for further price reduction. If it sells out, I'll just consider something else
I have the Sonos Arc, two ones for surround and two subs. Should I upgrade ? I feel like if I change the soundbar then I'd want to replace the surrounds or vice versa.
Just something to note in case you want to wall mount the arc.

Despite the app issues, if you primarily plan to use an Arc for TV audio (as the intended design of this), the app issues have never caused this to not work with HDMI arc sourced audio.
Appreciate the follow up! What'd be a "good" price to lookout for? 🍻
