I'm curious why not just buy D batteries instead of AA ? I would imagine D batteries have a longer run time than AA?
As coincidence I happen to have some AA batts laying around 30-40 and a new device that can use D batts but are there really that many people in the world that have a similar scenario ?

In a pinch they are nice to have, but if you really want to use your device for a longer period of time (and keep your AAs longer lived), just buy an Alkaline C or D battery. Especially for kids toys!

These are meant to be used with AA rechargeable batteries. There are very few brands that make size C and D rechargeable batteries. Also it is difficult to find a charger that supports C and D rechargeable batteries.

Leaking alkaline D cells exist so that those people will throw their devices away and buy new ones. Ever try buying NiMH D cells? A 3AA parallel adapter takes over $6 in Eneloops.
