Just FYI, these are Henckels International, meaning made in China, not Germany like premium Henckels.
The easy way to spot this is the logo...1 figure holding the axe/pike=China. 2 figures standing side by side=German
They're great knives and surprisingly well made for the price. The tang runs all the way though the handle, and as long as you hand wash them they'll last forever. I'm a former chef and bought a set back in 2008. I use them every day and they still look new. Use a honing rod to keep the blade aligned after every few uses and I sharpen might about once every 2 months.

Can't go wrong with these.
I'm a semi knife snob but I also love a good value, so for your purpose I would actually recommend these. My everyday go-to is a Zwilling Henckels 4 Star chef knife, it's nothing fancy but it's reliable and relatively inexpensive. The problem with buying a $200 knife is that you will cry when your mother-in-law, roommate or further ex-(boy or girl)friend throws it into the sink, and believe me it will happen. IMO the yolo knives are more for bachelor with a disposable doctor salary and they're just impractical for everyday use.

I would invest in a whetstone and get gud at sharpening. I made a pos Kiwi knife sharp, my mother-in-law gave me a crappy knife to hack coconuts and I restored it to razor sharp. Learning how to sharpen a kitchen knife is more important than throwing money at a premium knife

Any thoughts on these knifes ?
Total knife noob in the kitchen and like a nice step up from what I currently have .. I have one of those cheap 12 piece knife sets . Anyone have any suggestions for a great knife set under $200 ?? Or should one just get the BEST knife for the price and forget the sets

When we needed a new knife set we bought a Henckels block set on sale at Ross. My understanding is that the Henckels is the low end Zwilling brand. We love them. They are still sharp and my husband washes them in the dishwasher (though I understand that is a no no) but no rust or anything. I'm by no means a professional chef, thus I didn't want to spend a fortune on the high end knives so personally I am happy with these. I guess in the end it just depends on your needs.

This or Vitorinox fibrox are the best everyman knives. There are better but for the price of fibrox or this one (on sale AND forged) can't be beat imho

I beg to differ.

Henckels produces incredible knives, and they make terrible knives.

The easiest way to tell the difference is in the price.

With these knives running around 13 bucks a piece, you aren't getting the good ones.

These particular knives are not hand made in Germany, and are instead mass produced in China- with much cheaper materials.

In my experience, I've had four total cheap Henckel knives that have all had the plastic handles break or crack within the first year.

Bought these to add to my high end set, returned them because they felt significantly worse in hand and i couldn't get over it.

$13/ea… on sale. Hence the post on the website slickdeals dot net. At least they're forged and full tang, though I didn't notice what kind of steel it uses. I'll defer to you on the construction reliability.

Having said that, these handles look annoying and I'm not a fan of this kind of curved edge on a santoku. I'd rather have one knife that's more comfortable and easy to use for around the same price.

The easiest way to tell is by the logo. Twins are usually made in Germany. Not twin logo is usually made in China.

Zwilling and Henckels are two different product tiers from the same company. Zwilling is the top-of-the-line premium brand, made in Germany or Japan with forged blades and pro-level features. Henckels is more of the entry-level line, great for home cooks, often stamped and made in other countries to keep the price accessible.

Zwilling means "twins" in German, so look for the twin logo—that's their top-tier line.

I spent 30 years in restaurants & hotels including 3 years as a butcher. I picked up a set of these several years ago when they were on sale for about $40. They are really nice knifes for everyday use in the kitchen. The tang runs all the way thru the handle and the handle itself is comfortable... for both me and my wife. The 5" knife has been one of the most used of our collection of knives that includes some that are really expensive, high-end German-made. Although inexensive, the blades hold a pretty good edge and I frequently use a sharpening steel to keep the edges straight. I also use a sharpening stone every 3-6 months (depending upon frequency of usage) to hone the edges. I have to say at this new lower price, this set is a very good deal.
