It's super old at this point. Unless you are doing it for either nostalgia or you have a VR app/hardware you're trying to develop, I will put that $50 towards a used Quest 2 for around or less than $100.at any given pawn shop.

Coming from a VR studio owner and patent holder.
I want one because I have a collection of most ever headset over the last 10 years include the alpha Oculus I was a part of but I won't buy this even at this price point because I will wait until people are basically giving them away as they hardware and software is super outdated, nothing is developed for it now, and are stuck running old apps if you can even find them. Unless you're testing your own stuff of course and you have a specific reason to use these specs for some reason.

But don't let me yuk your yum. Perhaps you have a reason I didn't consider.

My kid mostly uses her old clunky wired VR headset to play Roblox. Will this work? It would be nice to declutter her pc space and use this instead.
TIA

Wow...the Hive was THE VR setup back in the day. The design is pretty old and has some limitations, but I understand it's still SteamVR compatible, so might be good for PC gamers.

After doing a few minutes of minor research, here's what I've found:

-Support from HTC is dead, so you're on your own for getting software on it. A lot of Quest exclusives probably won't work without a lot of effort.

-It runs Android and HTC has provided a bootloader unlock tool on their developer page. However, it has zero official root methods and not a lot of traction on XDA.

-You can run most adb commands without any trouble to get as close to full control over it as possible (that includes side-loading apps and possibly software root like Shizuku).

-Specs wise, it shares a lot of similarities with the Quest 2, so raw performance is close: https://vr-compare.com/compare?h1...=pDTZ02PkT

-The displays are lower res than the Quest by a considerable margin. HOWEVER, they're also AMOLED, so you won't see as many of those "milky" blacks that you do on the Quest 2. If you just want it for 3D movies, it's probably way better than the Quest 2 for that.

I was considering buying multiples for gifts, but this doesn't look like it would be good for someone unable to tinker a bit.

Even if it could work as a "poor man's" Quest 2, the battery life on the controllers is abysmal.

Absolutely agreed -
Quest 2 is the better buy, and ultimately won't be much more expensive. I've seen new Quest 2's being sold on the different marketplaces for about $99 lately, which will also net you a $30 store credit.
The Vive has a nice amoled screen, but otherwise disappointing compared to the quest 2.

I've upgraded to the Quest 3, but the 2 is still very much serviceable and will get you newer tech, better tracking and probably a better experience on both standalone and PCVR gaming.

I believe the Vive doesn't offer wired PCVR, so you're probably going to take a visual hit in terms of that. The HTC marketplace is apparently pretty limited in offerings at this point. If it were between the Quest 1 and the Vive Focus Plus? Probably a tie or nod to the Vive, but tech has come so far since then that the small amount you'd save will probably end in frustration.

Looking at the reviews on B&H and Amazon, it seems like you need a monthly subscription to use this with Steam. Perhaps that's why this is discounted because nobody wants to pay a subscription to use this with Steam.

In your opinion, what's the best VR headset right now to use with PC, and if possible, to also use with PS5 but PC is my main focus?

I bought the psvr2 and have the pc adapter, but I think due to the lens type, it's pretty hard to get a sharp imagine.

Best VR for PC is subjective. but it's arguably the BigScreen Beyond 2 that recently released (shipping in June for new orders) or the Meganex Superlight. The PSVR2 is a good unit to use on the ps5 but it's not a plug and play ordeal when using it with Steam (there are occasional bugs to deal with). If it was an easy plug and play thing, the PSVR2 would have been the unit I buy since it's OLED and has a decent Binocular overlap.
