they can most certainly be refilled. they sell adapters on amazon to do so. but there are a few catches. 1. they are not designed to be refilled, so they will leak out of the top eventually, so make sure you get caps for them and cap them after you refill them till you need to use them.

2. it is illegal to transport them after refilling. take that for what you will. one of those rules that no one would actually follow, but could get you in trouble... i guess, somehow?

3. they wont be 100% full. in my experience, the best ive gotten is 2/3s. and thats with freezing the refill bottles, and all the other tricks.

if you are going to be going through a lot of these, i recommend investing in a kit that includes bottles that are designed to be refilled. mr heater sells one called fuel keg, and flame king also makes a kit. i the process is so much easier... no need to freeze bottles, etc, and no worries about leaks or traveling. AND, you get a full 1lb of propane. they last as long, if not longer than a prefilled disposable one.

im very happy to not be using the disposables any more. always felt bad being out in nature using a big wasteful disposable bottle.
Of course they don't want you refilling them. Check out YouTube for details...been doing it for years.
Yeah they're not officially refillable but in practice they're very refillable.

From Coleman's website: No, the 16 oz All-Purpose Propane cylinders are not refillable. Once empty, they can be recycled or properly disposed of according to your local solid waste authority. Use our CylinderSafe system to find contact information for your area.

I refilled these for home use for years. Like another user said, you don't get much more than about 10-11oz of fuel back into them unless you mess with the pressure relief valve (which I don't recommend doing). I modified a Flame King refill valve to work with these disposable green type. All that being said, I switched to the refillable Flame King 1lb tanks when REI had them on clearance for $9, I also have 5lb tank with adapter hose. Costco was selling the Flame King refill kit for $47 last year. Included (2) 1lb tanks with the refill valve and a stand. Definitely worth it if they bring it back. Typically, it's going to cost you $0.70 to a $1 to refill off a bigger 20lb tank.

For those that don't want to do the math and wonder if it's economical for them, somewhere around 16 disposable (@$3.33 ea) is the break even point vs buying the refill adapter ($24) and a tank ($16) + 16 refills (@$0.75 ea). That's assuming that you already have a 20 lb propane tank. You don't need the stand, I would consider buying more than one refillable though. Another thing to consider, these will be banned in California by 2028 and I read that other states may be doing the same. Not sure if that means the price of the refillables will drop in price, or increase though.

We used to buy these for home use and finally decided to get a 20-lb tank + adapter when the price of these 1-lb tanks skyrocketed. I have no idea why we didn't do that sooner. It costs us $13 for a refill and lasts about 1.5 grilling seasons (March-Sept for us).

Definitely +1 for the fuel keg. Have a couple, very easy to refill, love them.

That said I like to keep a coleman or two on deck for situations/backups, so I'm in on this deal, thanks OP.

There have been a few cases of explosions and death from refilling these 1lb propane tanks. I found an old one here:
https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota...explosion/
If you are going to do it, I recommend as others said; buy the cylinders made for it.

Just invest in the refillable tanks like the Mr. Heater Fuel Kegs or others. Mr. Heater has a proprietary refill kit which makes the whole refill process easy. Do search youtube for how-to on the refill kit if you've not done it before and take proper safety precautions.

Naive question:
is there any specific way/position, i should keep these tanks in my car during my car camping?
is it unsafe if this one shakes when the car moves?
