So this is like a Straight Talk deal, but about $50 more expensive because you have to pay the second month AND you have to upload your selfie.

Looks like that is the new rule moving forward
Including straight talk.

All Tracfone branded (Total, ST, etc) will have the same rule. So if ST has this deal now it would be the same 2 month pay but no port in and ID verification

Are we expected to pay for the 2 month plan if we were to buy the same phone from Verizon prepaid?

As per the reps, yes. But one good thing with Vzn prepaid is that for second month you might have to only pay $35 ($60 - $25 credit) because of the $25 monthly credit for the next 12 months .. or even lower with auto pay.

However that deal was only valid till 07-Apr AFAIK

I called TracFone at 1-888-442-5102 to check eligibility and 3 out of 3 reps confirmed it needs to have 2 months of paid service to qualify for unlock.
They made us.

Correct, the new rules requiring 60 days of paid service before unlocking became effective April 1, 2025 and apply to all "Verizon Value" brands (Total, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Tracfone, Walmart Family Mobile, etc.).

Here is the new policy:

Quote :
For customers with cellphones capable of remote unlocking (this includes most iPhones and some Android cellphones):

Verizon Value will remotely unlock the phone when it becomes eligible for unlocking, provided it meets the following conditions:

The cellphone must be in working condition and turned ON.
The cellphone has not been reported stolen or lost and there are no indicators of fraud.
The cellphone was activated with Verizon Value service by purchasing and redeeming an airtime plan on that specific phone ("Activation")

For all cellphones Activated on the Verizon network on or after November 23, 2021, the cellphone will be remotely unlocked automatically 60 days after paid Activation and 60 days of paid active service.

Does someone know if we need to use the sim on the same phone for 2 months for it to unlock?

Sims are registered to phone IMEI & stay with phone.
With the unknowns about the new unlock policy I wouldn't even consider moving plan before unlock. Some have been told by support it needs to be continuous service & moving would deactivate phone.

Thanks OP! In for the iPhone 13, for 90 day service. FYI the iPhone 16e does not include the UWB sensor. That means it cannot use Precision Finding to track Air Tags as accurately as other models like the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max, all of which have UWB capabilities. But the iPhone 13 is cheaper for me with precision tracking. I primarily need the phone for tracking air tags in my luggage and also want the future capability of using an esim for travel to Europe via Ubigi or Airlo. Cheers!
