They're saying that the simple pieces are okay to get from an off-brand but the pieces with a mechanical switchable path in the track, like a fork in the road, those are better to get official Lego brand pieces.

The pieces here are switch pieces, but you can also see a small stack of plain pieces in the background on the box picture. if you were just to get those plain pieces, you could get them from an off-brand.
