If your garage drops below 40d or so in the winter you will have issues. The thermostat is in the fridge. When the fridge gets above high 30s, the fridge kicks on the compressor to cool the freezer, which exhausts to the fridge. Since the fridge is staying at its slightly above freezing temperature, this cycle never trips, meaning your freezer gets above freezing temperature and things start to thaw.

Garage ready fridges have a heating pad with a thermostat on it that warms the sensor if the temperature outside the garage falls below a certain temperature, or a dedicated sensor in the freezer, to ensure the fridge cycles properly, keeping your freezer items frozen.

For most fridges you can buy a garage ready conversion kit off Amazon/eBay for $10-20 but it requires installing and wiring the pad into the back of your fridge. The heating pad has a sensor on it that turns the heating pad on when the garage temperature falls below ~40 or so. Here's an example (this is NOT for the fridge in this deal, it's just an example https://a.co/d/4BG6gLx )

At least this is how a friend explained it to me who is more knowledgeable on the matter when all the ice cream in my non garage ready fridge in the garage melted last winter, 😂 so take it FWIW. If you don't plan on using the freezer then you should be ok.
I got this fridge from Costco a couple of years ago. I use it in the garage. It's almost a shame as it looks good, quiet and works well. I had zero issues and am impressed with it - easy to clean and space is well laid out. If you're on the fence, just get it, as the tariff threat is going to make it more expensive.

Looks like this model isn't garage ready unfortunately

What does that even mean? Does it need special wiring or something? Always thought a fridge was a fridge...

Laughable someone would downvote this comment. I don't live in a house so how would I know this??

Does this fridge need a water connection? Or just electricity. Looking for a spare garage fridge

Are LG fridges reliable? I thought I saw stories about them dying right after the warranty ended.

Have on of these. Died in less than 10 months. LG tech came and fixed it (changed the evaporators and compressor), and it has worked great ever since. Not garage ready as the food in the freezer will thaw if it gets too cold in the winter. Good price for an extra fridge to keep in case.

Stay away from LG. I know this is not one of the models with their vertical compressors that are absolute garbage but as a principle, don't give money to a company that defrauds by denying warranty claims or requiring arbitration when they know they have a defective product.

In my area of Texas during the summer a garage is routinely 120-150F. Winter, 40F in the garage would be fairly rare.

Literally just bought a GE 21.9 cu.ft "garage ready" fridge for $650. Should I cancel?
That is a great price for a garage ready fridge. Any reason you chose GE over Midea?

Not sure if this is 120V or 240V - 99% certain it is 120V, and too lazy to look - as I am not in the interest for another fridge. But, if you have kids/roommates and the space, a secondary smaller fridge with a freezer is first world privilege. Money well spent. Avoids fights as everyone tries to cram the fridge and freezer with who knows what that will likely sit there for months until they need their tupperware back for something that will also sit for months.

I'm in Phoenix and peak summers here are also in the high 115- 120 range. Garages can get as high as 160 as well. What should one look for in garage ready fridges for this type of extreme heat?
