This was the very first game I bought for my family's very first mac, right about 30 years ago. I still remember firing this up for the first time and realizing how different the future was going to be.

While I loved these back in the day, I'd probably skip them now. I got the Bounty Hunter remaster not too long ago and the gameplay mechanics and the "remastered" graphics don't hold up.
Bounty Hunter was great.

Personally I didn't think the remaster was all that great. Honestly I didn't think the original was really worth remaking to begin with so I didn't have any nostalgia towards the game. To me it felt like an okay Doom total conversion...
It wasn't a Doom engine game.

If I remember correctly, it was a lead forward, at the time. Doom's maps were sort of a fake 3D enviornment. You could technically go up in height, but you couldn't actually have one floor on top of another floor. Everything in Doom was on an XY plane. I think Dark Forces you could have rooms on top of each other. And Dark Forces also added things like crouching and jumping.

It was kind of a big deal at the time, although it probably got overshadowed by Duke Nukem 3D.

I haven't played the remaster. But there is an open source engine being built for the game (you'd still need to own the original, which was probably free at some point on GOG):

I'm not sure what the remaster gives you over the open source engine (plus mods). I think the remastered cutscenes for sure. I believe the developer of the open source engine did some work for the remaster as well.

This game gave me the worst motion sickness back in the day. Really, the only game that ever did that.

Got this in a Steam Bundle last year. I can't play this anymore. I get terrible motion sickness.

Geesh I remember hitting the 0 key on the numeric pad because that's what I used to navigate. That was before WASD. This is ancient. The Dark Forces games were ok games (good at the time) but I enjoyed Doom way more including reboots.

I got this a while back. Still fun. And I prefer this more methodical shooting than with games like Doom.

Same. The very first level with the green globe you could walk through felt absolutely nuts. I remember my Performa monitor being too dark that I was not able to get through some areas easily. Played it about a decade back and it was so much easier.

This is the one. If you're a big star wars fan maybe it's worth a trip through but as a Doom fan this clone fell far short originally. Also the update Doom 1+2 got last year is fantastic
Still haven't played the Doom 1 + 2 port, their Quake remaster was legit though. The remake of System Shock was very good too, didn't click with me but was still top notch.

Wasn't saying it was a Doom engine, just felt like a Doom mod....like, not a full fledged game but a fan creation.

I played DF back in the day as well but had a pretty neutral opinion of it, didn't have any nostalgia propping up my experience with rose colored glasses (what I think we need for many of these remakes to fully enjoy the experience), that was my point. But perhaps I didn't make that entirely clearly though.

If you get the original version, there is a free remaster that honestly looks as good as the paid version. I enjoyed it.

The problem is, it's not a Doom clone. Jumping, ducking, looking up or down, and the multi-layered levels weren't standard in FPS games yet. I'm almost certain Dark Forces pioneered one if not more of these.

An actual story with objectives (aside from get blue/red/yellow key card) wasn't common yet either.

I really wished they included the Gravis Ultrasound font in the remaster. Hearing the game music through that soundcard is my happy place
