That thing weighs 300 pounds and looks quite unsteady. It could squash a cat or small dog very easily.

If done right you may even get 4 cats.

How much more convenient are setups like this versus batteries with some sort of inverter/charge controller setup?

You still need charger/PV/Inverter. This simply replaces a bunch of batteries/cables/cabinets and is far easier to balance/manage than many batteries. Too bad this lacks UL listing for ESS, would be req'd for install in Cali.

Wall mounts are ideal for garages or spaces requiring low depth. As others have mentioned server racks are Alot easier for a one man install.

With that said this is not UL listed

Cool product, but only get it if your doing off grid, or dont require a UL listing for grid tie in.... Through amazon with wills code they were right around $2K when they first launched but that was very temporary and this is the lowest I seen since than.

Could you explain "far easier to balance"?

Sure. When you have multiple batteries, you have multiple BMS (management systems) which get charge from controller. The cells in these batteries are supposed to be managed by each BMS, but during frequent charge/recharge cycling, it's common for cells to drift out of balance, and the BMS doesn't have enough to time to do sufficient passive balancing (BMS can have active or passive, have different voltages for activating balancing, etc. ) This is magnified when you have batteries from different brands, different capacities, etc. To use a unified battery with a single BMS is much easier to monitor, and remedy when any drift/balancing issues occur.

I'm a bit confused by this price so hoping someone can help elaborate. If the power wall and equivalent battery backup systems I've researched in the past are $10-15k for roughly the same capacity (14-16 kWh) how is this one one so much cheaper? It can't just be those names alone so I'm guessing those do something different vs this?

this is just a large plain battery. tesla powerwall has inverter, solar charge controller, and all the rest, built-in to go with the battery.

Ahhh. Now that makes sense. Still not sure those things are worth the cost but I get it now. Thanks for that!

well, the tesla powerwall 3 can take in up to 20kw of solar with six mppts, and has a robust 11.5 kw inverter, which together is worth at least a few thousand alone.

sure, it's still pricey over diy, but some people can afford it and like the all-in-one modular clean-looking integrated solution, with sophisticated system monitoring, and without a rat's nest of wires everywhere like you often see with diy systems.

it's not unlike a tesla solar roof. much cooler and slicker having integrated solar tiles covering your roof, than mounting big ugly rectangular panels, but ridiculously expensive. for folks that can afford it, and want a cleaner, stealthier look, more power to them.
