It's essentially the same thing, just the first generation. I haven't heard the 3, but this one sounds phenomenal. Nothing can touch it for the money.

This one is considered the 2nd generation. This one does sound great. The 3rd one on the other hand, it's not the cleanest of sound. The 3,or newest didn't have the fuller, cleaner sound this one has, to me. This one might have just benefited more from a few volume notches, a bass control, boost. 3 had good ideas, just the execution didn't sound the best for me. It still sounds good. There's more bass on the newest, treble and bass control. Soundwise though, I kind of like this one more. The 3 also has the exposed bass on the bottom that a lot don't like. I don't really use the 3 that much as I thought I would. Some ideas were good but they didn't wow me with the sound quality. I prefer the encore and that lg XBOOM.

I have version 3. It is a little larger, has 10 Hz more bass, improved battery and updated Bluetooth. Some say it is muffled compared to version 2 or that version 2 has cleaner sound. I think that depends on environment. They both go on sale for around this price.

Not sure if this is the first or second gen, but I had it and returned it and regretted that for a very long time. Then I got my hand on the 3rd Gen and still have it. The Go + Play I think has/had some battery issues, they don't seem to last that long health wise. The sound is phenomenal. I believe this a 2-way speaker, where the Go+Play 3 is a 3-way speaker. The frequency response is a littler lower (deeper bass) for the 3 compared to this one. The 3 sounds amazing, has a bit more uummphh, but has the exposed bass at the bottom. I also agree with your comment, this one (gen 1/2, which I had returned) to me sounded almost even better than the 3, so I am contemplating getting one now at this price. I think this one, while maybe a 2-way vs a 3-way system, and having only a slighter narrower frequency range and slightly less wattage, does have a slightly better sound profile. It just was /sounded a tad warmer and literally perfect, and the 3 has more power and could be louder (which I don't blow the sound to the max) this one is still a tad ahead from a sound profile. I think for this one they just nailed it, for the 3 it's amazing but maybe only 95% for those who like it a little more subtle and nuanced. But any of these under $150 IMHO will be the best BT speaker money can by at that range.

Go Play vs Go Play 3
50-20khz vs 43-20khz
100W vs 160W
2-way vs 3-way
BT 4.1 vs 5.3
Weight 3433g vs ~4700
both have aux-in port.
Battery lasts longer with the 3
3 has exposed subwoofer at the bottom (it's not a beach device)
both have dual-mic for conference calls etc.
Realistically, both are not really portable for outside on the beach and mostly meant to carry and use around the house, but you could use them for tailgating or car camping. None of them is water proof or resistant! Not for the beach, especially not the 3 with the exposed subwoofer.

Sound is louder and has stronger bass on the 3, subjectively though sound is "cleaner" on the Go Play.

I bought this one HKGOPLAYMINIBLKAM for $154.99 in June 2021. So, 5 bucks less now.

The 3 goes as HKGOPLAY3BLKAM when you order. I got it for $160 in Jan '24. You have 30 days free returns. no questions asked. It will be interested to see if my memory fooled me, but I think the 1 was better. I will put my 3 on the Bay then.

BTW, The LUNA is also amazing, it's slightly bigger SONOS Roam, does not have wifi but more power. But the roam is better for travel. You can also pair 2 equal ones, like luna:luna or GoPlay:GoPlay. I don't think you can pair a 1 with a 3 though, I will try.

A lot of people don't know that treble and bass are adjustable on the Play 3 to get a cleaner or boomier sound as one prefers. I like it cleaner so I adjust the treble up.

Press the Bluetooth and Volume Down buttons simultaneously to adjust bass, and the Volume Up and Multifunction buttons to adjust treble.
