DeWALT's parent company, Stanley-Black&Decker, really should be selling the brushed drill/driver as Black & Decker, Porter Cable, or Craftsman… not DeWALT. They already have rebadged B&D/Craftsman versions of the same combo.

I see no reason to keep offering brushed tools with the DeWALT name, especially when there are enough tiers within the brand (Brushless, Atomic, XR, PowerDetect, etc) and even the lesser brands get higher tiers with rebadged brushless DeWALT products… like Craftsman R+P Brushless line.

Yeah, I can only recommend these if you are already in the battery line and only need the most basic drill/driver… but it's pretty easy to ask too much of this drill. A few years ago I burned up my brother's 20V B&D and my mother's 20V DeWALT brushed drills using them with a hole saw on a piece of furniture. That's when I got a Brushless Atomic and the difference is night and day… but I had to go even further with a PowerDetect XR for masonry bits (holes in cinder block, anchors in garage floor, etc). Heck, now I'm rocking DeWALT's brushless XR SDS Plus rotary hammer drill for hole SAWS in cinderblock walls. My mother will be using my super-basic Brushless Atomic later today for a closet door hinge that needs longer screws and even that is such a major upgrade from her brushed DeWALT drill that I burned up.

After my mother's Porter Cable circular saw start smoking the same way on a relatively small job easily handled by my saw, I realized brushless is almost always the way to go.

Great insight. I did not know about the difference between brushed and brushless before.

I agree that dewalt has too many tiers and no point for any of their offers to be brushed. Badge those as B&D or craftsman

And props to your mom for being able to handle a circular saw.

I'd get this over the set in this post.

You can get an impact driver later
