Just got two 18tb Eco's drives for $400. What's the longevity on these?

Exos is a 5yr warranty, Barracuda is a standard 2yr, Iron Wolf is 3yr, and Iron Wolf Pro is 5. Though for $50 you get 12 more TB on a brand new drive.

Nobody knows yet. Overall quality for Seagate may be improving due to HAMR, per BackBlaze, but it's way too soon to tell.

Real question only they know, is how much rebinning is happening in terms of platter quality.

One indication it's still a lot is the drive ratings for Barracuda remain at 100 Days per year. If they had confidence, they likely would bump it up to 200-365, just to send a message to the market that they get it.

The same could be said for exos as well, same tech.

Take this how you want but my theory is that Seagate repurposed the line from the prior generation HAMR Exos to make these new Barracudas. That particular line of Exos drives never got a retail release and was only available to the general public from resellers of recertified drives. The specs of those old HAMR Exos drives is virtually identical to the new Barracudas, except for the fancy cache and workload rating. The newer HAMR Exos line has different attributes, making it seem less likely that the Barracudas are binned versions of it. That's just my theory.

Where has Backblaze indicated that HAMR is helping Seagate's reliability? They do show Seagate's AFR dropping, however I don't recall seeing any HAMR models in the stats they've released.

I'm not sure I agree with your last point. If they gave it the same workload rating as their high end models, it would likely cannibalize the sales of the more expensive ones. And for people getting worked up about the workload rating, I just want to point out that WD doesn't even give these specs for their Blue line (which is the most comparable to the Barracuda).

Same here, just bought 2 of the 18tb shuckables exos for $400. 48tb for $450 instead of 36tb for $400 is very tempting, but I did some research (i.e. googling/redditing) and the Barracudas are very strongly recommended to NOT be used as anything but cold storage because of their comically low rated days/year usage of 100. If you're putting this in a media server or something - like I am - you're going to have a bad time, according to seagate.

I don't really know what the usecase of 24tb barracuda low-use drives is? Seems odd.

No, this drive is not good for NAS unless you use it less than 100 days of the year, according to Seagate

Do we expect that Seagate drives will go way up in price in the coming months due to Tarrifs? I thought these were primarily made in China. I thought we'd already have seen the price of these go way up...

You answered your own question - these are cold storage. Backups.
