Reviews are no bueno but the price + REI liberal return policy maybe make this worth a shot.

I have the 6 person version of this and it's been a trooper surviving some pretty gnarly weather. Love the height as a taller person too.

I have this tent. It leaked really bad from the seams.

Oh dam. So it is pretty much useless when it is raining while at camp.

The zipper isnt an issue on yours as the reviews state ?

Nope, and I'm pretty hard on it. Use it 3-5 times per year in rain, sand, and with two large dogs. I'd recommend the 6 person version unconditionally to anyone. Not sure what is different about the 4 person version that trips people up.

Also I think the rei reviews include the 6 man.

In 300+ Amazon reviews almost no one mentions excessive zipper or rain issues, a few do but thats every tent. Yet somehow on rei its half the 28 reviews. Almost seems like bad luck.

I tried so hard not to buy this. I failed. Eff it, I've had great experiences with a bunch of Alps gear over the years.

My recommendations to get the best performance out of this tent...
  1. This is not a free-standing tent, so you'll need to be sure you stake it out at the corners for it to stand. If you don't do that first, the poles will twist and it will collapse very easily.
  2. If you are camping in any wind above a light breeze, you absolutely need to use the guy lines at all four corners, and connect all the ties and velcro straps between the rain fly and the tent body. If you don't, it will easily collapse in a breeze. I learned this in a rainstorm, but fortunately the tent didn't leak and I was able to get out and stake out the lines. Once I did that, it's fine in up to 25-30mph wind gusts.
  3. Get some better stakes. I recommend some MSR groundhog knockoffs from Amazon (I do this with all my tents).
  4. See if you can find the Alps ground cloth for this. I have it and it has definitely extended the life of mine. Also makes for cleaner packup, since the tent stays out of the dirt.
I think you'll really like it - enjoy!
