I honestly have no idea why anyone rents from them. I have a corporate discount code from my employer for both Avis and their sister brand Budget. I receive steep discounts and full insurance package at no additional cost, whether booking for work or leisure. And Budget always beats Avis.
However, Budget customer service sucks, especially the Fort Lauderdale counter. Maybe Avis has better customer service that might warrant the higher cost. Perhaps that's why people book them instead.
Checking for a rental on a one week minivan rental out of SFO.
Good luck!

In contrast, if you were dead set on something like a full-size hybrid (a Prius) the AARP rate is pretty killer... but at $367.91 it was nearly double the rate of the traditional (non-hybrid) Full-Size.
I was specifically shopping for a minivan and my corporate rate was still about $50 better than the rate offered via the AARP deal, but that's because the Pay Now discounting was only approximately 10% whereas the same discounting on the Full-Size Hybrid (for example) was 20%.
Good luck!
