I'm a vine reviewer. You don't get paid. You legit pick from lists of ever-rotating products and submit a review that is supposed to have substance and validity. The more work you do on quality reviews, the more you can choose for more items. I think some people who are vine reviewers get scared that they won't get as many of they rate a product lower though because I see a lot of 5-Star reviews being Vine related.
Do you get free products in exchange for your review? And how does one get started?
The free item is the payment. Which is why they both mark the review as incentivized (as required by the FTC) and also report it as taxable income.
The "value" of a product is tied to its cost. Getting something free always makes it seem better than paying for it. I feel all the reviews should include the actual amount paid bc companies also game this by initially selling the product very cheaply to get good reviews and then later hike the price. "Amazing product, great value, a steal at this price!"...amazing/great/steal at what price?
(actually you probably can mention price, along with a host of other transgressions, as long as you are giving four or five stars.)

You get free products from lists you can pick from. The lists change frequently so it isn't a guarantee that you will have the same options as others. The intent behind it is to generate more reviews for products so customers have a more clear view of what they are buying. I can't speak for how others review their items but if a product doesn't meet my expectations or falls short of the specs/product details, I make sure to review it honestly.
The thing that I didn't realize before becoming a Vine reviewer is that you aren't just assigned a random product. You select a product from different categories. There are hundreds and hundreds of listings to choose from and they constantly change. It takes time and effort find something that is worth the effort of providing a quality review for after taking the time to use/assess the product so, naturally, I'm more picky about selecting things I legitimately think might be useful to try. Taking that into account, I think the higher number of 5-Star reviews could also be attributed to the fact that we are selecting things we might find beneficial. When we find out that the broom/dustpan that we needed really was just the right thing or that the portable air compressor that helped us out when our tire pressure was low actually made our lives better, we are going to review those products higher because of our needs/experiences giving a natural bias. The thing about that bias is that if you are buying that product, you have a bias in needing it as well so, in that sense, I have a much more well rounded appreciation for vine reviews than I did before. That isn't saying I think every one of them is genuine or insightful but I do understand more of what goes into the program than before.
You have to request to be in the program (I don't remember where because it was a couple of years ago). I did review quite a few of my purchases on Amazon and fell like that also plays a part in finally getting accepted but I don't know for sure. I do know that I was on a wait list for a very long time before getting in.

That's a great point about including prices paid for a product in the review. That would be very insightful. Especially with how many coupon codes and lightning deals get tossed around for some of these products and their inflated prices.
As far as the product being the payment for the review, you have it backwards. To be a participant, you have to provide quality reviews to continue to get more products. Those reviews take time and energy which is work. If you don't follow that methodology, you get limited or cut off. The number of stars tied to those reviews is meaningless so long as you are participating.
I explained my more well rounded insight into Vine reviews in my previous comment so feel free to check that out. I still take other Vine reviews with a grain of salt but have a healthier appreciation for the program now as well. To each their own. I felt increasingly negative regarding Vine reviews before having the personal experience myself. It doesn't change all of these opinions but it is definitely more well rounded
