The models with Windows run full Windows 11 home edition. So they are compatible with anything that runs on Windows.

The models with SteamOS generally only play what's on the Steam store out-of-the-box, however, there are ways you can install other game launchers like Epic, GOG, Ubisoft, etc. For GamePass, you can use the streaming feature. GeForce Now is also a way to stream more of your games from other libraries.

If you are a little technically savvy, you can partition your hard drive and set it up to dual boot into Windows or SteamOS which is what I did to get the best of both worlds.

I been reading some conflicting information. Does this only run games on steam? Does it work with xbox game pass, epic games or gog games?

Depends on the version you get. Windows versions can run games from any store, SteamOS works directly with Steam, but you can get games from Epic, GOG, and Blizzard (probably others) working, it just takes a bit more work to do. I have games from all three on my Steam Deck. There are video guides that take you through it, it's not that hard.
Xbox Game Pass will not natively work on SteamOS, only streaming.

Dang it, I'm torn between the original Legion Go Z1E on sale for $499 or the Z2Go for $550. Z1E obviously more powerful but i hear some issues from the original have been fixed in the Go S series (native horizontal screen, battery life, etc.).

Original all the way. Not only does it have the Z1E but also detachable controllers. No brainer especially for the price.

If you haven't tried original Legion in-person you should. Think of the games you want to play. I bought one and returned it.
The detachable is great in theory but adds flex and width to the unit if you're playing handheld. Plus it's really big. The "mouse" mode wasn't as good as I thought and playing Valorant wasn't that great.

I opted for Ally X on FB marketplace. Ally X is bigger than OG Ally but got it for the extra ram.

The extra ram is super helpful in more demanding games. Helldivers 1 & 2 is fun on ally X, quite playable.

I also sync with 2 sn30 pro and kids play retro games on it.

SteamOS is amazing (main/beta releases) Ally X. I imagine it's a great experience to on both Go and Go S now.

Thinking about buying the SteamOS and then installing windows with an extra key I have...

But at the same time... I'm not sure if this device is worth $330 more than my OG ROG Ally Z1E...

I admit it's a tough call, I'm still not sure myself. I tried the original ROG Ally but it just wasn't comfortable for my hands and the sticks were too loose for me. Ally X felt better but it still became uncomfortable after playing for a while. The Legion Go S has some of the best ergonomics of the handhelds I've tested, and having a native SteamOS build on it is very nice. But is double the RAM, a larger screen, SteamOS custom made for it, and better ergonomics worth the $330?

I'm considering getting it through best buy. They have a 60 day return window. I figure I can get it, if the price drops they'll match. Or if Gen2 handhelds with the Z2E come out and the price isn't $1k+, I can return it and order one of those.

The hard thing is if neither of those things happen, I can take a $450 hit from the rog ally... But a $850 hit from the Lenovo would SUCK

Wish this had the bigger 80whr capacity. I would have picked this up instead of an MSI Claw 8.

Wait a few more months for the ROG Xbox Ally ($499) or Ally X ($799). Those are the rumored prices, and Windows will be optimized to actually run well on a handheld.

I bought a open box legion go s z2go steam os for 380 on marketplace. Like it alot and the performance isnt that far behind the z1e. The only issue i have with it is that the sound crackling appears after sleep and wake at times. I dont think its worth the extra to have a z1e for the price tbh. Maybe when the z2e releases

The sound crackling is a Steam OS bug. I put Steam on my Asus ROG Ally and had the crackling until I switched it to the Beta channel and got a later preview version of SteamOS. They have apparently fixed the crackling in the preview version.

The Z1E GO was 500 + about 150 for a 2TB nvem upgrade, so 650. The GO S SteamOS is 780. The difference is 130 with 16gb of RAM and better cooling, assuming you can also install Windows in the GO S somehow... tough call to return the Z1E GO.

60 day window only if you're a paying member. 14 days otherwise which is not great but by the same token, best buy is really the only game in town. Post purchase prices adjustment done online was almost instantaneous. Great device, (slightly less) outrageous price
