A rechargeable needs to be used a certain number of cycles to be "worth it". It's probably around 4x more expensive and taxing on the environment than a regular alkaline. So you'd need to use it for more than 4 cycles in it's lifetime to be advantageous. Using it in low drain applications probably won't be worth it because you won't get 4 full charges out of it before the end of its lifetime. I would only use rechargeables in medium to high drain applications.

I always seem to see a bunch of mixed reviews about these Amazon rechargeable batteries. This is a very tempting price, so, I'm curious, are these at least worth buying and having around to use, for things like TV/Roku remote controls? Or would this likely be a complete waste of $9?

How often are you changing batteries on the remote control? Seems like a waste to use rechargable batteries on things where you don't frequently change the batteries.

Rechargable don't have a fixed number of years.

Note that rechargeable do have a lifetime in that they can leak over time, just like alkalines, if you don't use them.

I've had a huge number of rechargeable batteries leak and die on me over the years with nominal/no use.

Interesting info.

Even if it lasts 5 years, a lot of remotes nowadays are smart remotes with voice and Bluetooth built in.
So rechargeables would still be the answer.

For IR only remotes, I guess one could use alkalines

This is a good deal. However, in every batch of these I've ordered (AA and AAA) at least 1 or 2 of them fail after a few charges

Damn, are these really that junky? I thought Amazon basics were supposed to be decent batteries. Did they change the manufacturer or something? Was thinking of getting more for my led headlamps, now those take some juice.

I've switched to rechargeable batteries following numerous recent instances where the big name alkaline batteries were leaking after a few months. Ruined several remotes and small electronic devices. My understanding is rechargeable batteries like these are less prone to leaking.
