Note that this is a soil amendment, not a substitute for actual topsoil. "Garden soil" (just like the stuff labeled "raised bed soil") is a misnomer, because this is almost entirely peat moss, some compost, and a wetting agent. Be sure to mix it with a much larger amount of real topsoil—preferably what's already in your garden, but you can also purchase bags of plain topsoil. And no need to waste your money on fancy topsoil blends, like Scott's. Even the big box stores usually have fairly local stuff for cheap.

home depot deal is better? 5 - 1 cu ft bags for 10.00 2/0 per cu ft. lowes 2.50 ysh for .75 cu ft

6 bags would be 134qt, so 9.75qt/$1. Costco would be 5.55qt/$1. Pretty good deal.

That Home Depot deal is 14.9qt/$1, so even better, but I am seeing a lot of people not seeing the ad in their area. Plus some of the reviews of Vigoro are not good compared to Miracle-Gro.

yeah i hear that. it's dirt cheap for sure laugh out loud my 'soil' is clay so pretty much anything is an improvement. effing developers plowed all the topsoil away into a big burm on the edge of our community.

My lawn has dirt. Tried raking and putting grass seed but it didn't grow. If I lay this soil down and then plant the seed will it work? Frustrated.

yes i didn't mean to suggest it was. potting mix is great for planters. i use it in my earthbox. too expensive for the ground.

I have used this successfully for repairing lawn sections. Using Scott's sun and Shade seed, the soil worked well in south west Michigan. I stirred the seed and soil in a wheel barrow before laying it down and made sure the soil stayed damp for a few weeks (watering or rain). Hope that helps. Best of luck!

I have a 600 sq ft area of lawn I gotta raise up by 1" to 3". I just need regular topsoil for that right? Or do I mix in a little sand too?

Depends on your soil. Normally I'd recommend root washing them, pruning their roots as needed, dropping them into holes no bigger than the root ball, and backfilling with the native soil. This is what Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott (see link below) recommends. But 80 of them? I'm lazy, so I'd knock off a bunch of the potting mix, dig a hole no larger than needed to fit, backfill with the native soil.

Whichever way you go, make sure you top dress with good compost, worm castings, or composted manure, give them a thick layer of mulch, and water them in well.

Trust Garden Professors. They're horticultural scientists, not mere gardeners with blogs, which is what most gardening advice is.

Yep, agreed. Earthboxes are cool. I grow mostly at my parents' house up the street, and they're not yet used to watering as much as containers need, so sub-irrigated planters are often the way to go here.

If the top is already soft or loose, don't bother. Just spread the seed and water at least daily to keep the ground continuously wet for at least a few weeks. I'm not an expert, but this has worked for my parents' house. Make sure your seed type matches the amount of sun your yard gets.

Alternatively, consider going with native plant ground cover instead of grass, or at least find a very drought-resistant grass seed to use. Grass is literally our #1 "crop" in the USA by a factor of two, and wastes tons of water to maintain.

I have a wall retainer that going to need soil over concrete base. Is this all is needed or I will need to mix with other type of soil?

Topsoil is the way to go. Mixing in a little sand wouldn't hurt, but also wouldn't help.

You want almost entirely topsoil, not this. You want more inorganic matter that won't break down. This is mostly peat and some compost, which are both organic matter that will break down over time, leaving the soil level in your retained area lower and lower each year. Topsoil doesn't break down like this.

I had to build up the lawn on the edge of my concrete driveway, where erosion had created a small drop off. I got a pickup truck bed full of fill dirt, built up the area and planted some variety of coated bermuda seed. About 30% of it sprouted and struggled to grow.

Later, heavy rains washed it away, along with 10% of the dirt I just added.

I gave up and put bermuda sod over the area, which grew right away with daily watering.

TL,DR: My experience with seed hasn't been positive, Get some sod and have better results.
