he Garmin Varia RTL515 Rearview Radar Bike Taillight will make your cycling safer by warning you about cars approaching from behind, and by alerting those drivers to your presence. The taillight's radar can detect an approaching vehicle as far as 153 yards behind you and will issue a visual warning—shown on your phone with the Varia app, a Garmin Edge bike computer, or the optional Varia Radar Display—along with audible and vibration alerts. The light shines at 20 lumens with a steady red light, eight lumens in peloton mode (low intensity to protect fellow riders' vision), 29 lumens with a night flash, and 65 lumens with a day flash. Its 220° beam makes you visible from the side as well as from the rear.
The Varia RTL515 will run for six hours on night steady or night flash, 8 hours on peloton, and 16 hours on day flash per charge. It's compact at 3.9 x 0.8 x 1.6", and its vertical orientation allows for leg clearance and a comfortable ride.

This is a relatively good peace of mind for road riding. I recommend it at $170 even if it does go to $150. $20 is not that much IMHO, and if you ride rather have the safety than not.

If budget is everything, you could look into the Magene L508 "knock off" that is typically at $130. Still a good option vs. having nothing or having just a tiny mirror.

I do mostly mountain bike trails so this Garmin Varia RTL515 may not be that essential.

I was considering it but the lumen was too low for my liking.

I bought this device last time it was at $150, everything is great except there is one complaint that I want express…it doesn't work very well if you ride along highway service roads. The radar is so sensitive that it keeps warning you the cars on the highway even thou you're on the service road. Which is bad because I start ignoring the warnings, then lo and behold periodically an actual car is really on the service road with you!!!

I wonder if it would alert you to mountain lions stalking you?

I use a Bike Peddler Take a Look "tiny mirror", and it is way more effective than nothing. I suppose this tailight radar would be somewhat better, but for $15, consider this: Bike Peddler Take A Look Cycling Eyeglass Mirror https://a.co/d/03LDyZf

Since it tracks an object's speed, it will alert you if the mountain lion is running faster behind you than you're biking. At least you know it's not a car.
