Pretty insane deal albeit an open box unit. It's the same unit as a 7100 Onkyo and a DRX-3.4 Integra. Comes with DIRAC Live, IMAX Enhanced and all the bells and whistles.

Only thing I think it's missing would be the 9 channel pre-out, but that's really a personal preference anyway.

Of course, it's location dependent, the closest unit to me is $628.99, but you can get an excellent unit shipped for $678.99

Refurbed Onkyo 7100 is going for $779.00 [onkyousa.com]

I have the 505 version of this (wanted pre-outs for my external amps since I have thirsty floorstanding speakers). Jumped into it for the latest HDMI spec (I wanted variable refresh rate for PS5 / Gran Turismo 7). Good sound quality, easy to get up and running, and DIRAC is nice. Some people swear it's a must-have. The remote leaves a lot to be desired (cheap and not backlit). But a good price if you don't need pre-outs.

Thread title is inaccurate.

Should be $678. I know OP mentioned the correct $678 price in his post, but the thread title saying $578 is what brings people into this post.

EDIT: I do see that "Open Box-Fair" condition can be had for $578.

I've always wondered - does this receiver have independent high and low pass filters for each sub output? For example - can I set one sub out to be 20-60hz and the other 60-120hz?

They aren't individual sub outputs I think.

I wanted pre-outs too so I bought an open box Integra 3.4 a year ago, purely picked it over waiting on the RZ50 cuz my cabinet shelf space is limited. The shorter form factor allowed me to slap a AC Infinity Aircom on it.

Applause

I have an Integra DRX4. Works well, would miss the legacy inputs it has unlike this one and I got it really cheap off marketplace so debating if this will be worth it just for DIRAC. Currently run a 5.1.2 setup, I probably wouldn't add more speakers for 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 anytime soon.

Can someone explain what pre-outs are and why you might need them. I currently have a 7.1/5.1.2 setup but have to choose between leaving it as Atmos or 5.1 because I'm not going to keep changing cables back and forth. I've been waiting for an affordable 9.1.2 system for a while. This might finally be it. Also how reliable is an open box unit. I'm assuming you don't get the full warranty? Also it's listen as like new. Would I be better off having it shipped or going to a store? Closest one with open box is about out an hour or so away.

Preouts let you use another dedicated amp if you wanna go super high end. So this would just be the receiver/decoder and then you'd have super high end dedicated amp hardware for high end speakers. Unless you're dropping serious $$$$ into a home theater you're unlikely to need this.

I researched the Onkyo 7100 which has the same guts. The sub output is just split so the two outputs don't have separate settings and can't be calibrated separately. You can get an external processor to separately tune, I don't have the model number handy, it's like $200 but reusable on any receiver.

I need pre-outs so pass on this. Zone 2 pre-outs are useless because they don't have a D/A converter - same as my Onkyo.

If you think this receiver is going to have all the power you'll ever need, you don't need pre-outs. Pre-outs just let you take a channel/channels and relay the signal to an external amp. So instead of using the internal amplifier for that channel, you use use an external amp.

For people who use them, it's typically just for the front L + R speakers as -- if they're big floorstanders -- they might want a lot of wattage. Some people get really gung ho and get dedicated amps that can do three channels (typically front L + R + center). Some get dedicated amps that can do five channels or seven channels, etc. But since most surround speakers in a HT setup don't require a ton of juice, a pretty beefy amp like this probably wouldn't need a hand on surround sound speakers.
