Dirac when not fettered can be really great, but I hate their business model, esp. the non-portable licenses and inconsistent availability of features. Selling high end room EQ with a big void that can't be filled? Silly, and bad for users.
Onkyo NR7100. I opted for that deal vs the LX305 for the ability to set individual crossovers alone.

Own it. Love it. I first used it without running Dirac live and it sounded just ok. I then used Dirac live and now it's amazing. Please know that the LX-305 doesn't like Klipsch speakers(I don't know who still buys klipsch anyways as they look cool but sound like crap) but it's amazing with Focals.
I bought the 505 and reluctantly returned it. Dirac was incredible making the sound better than I ever heard. Except... -I have a subwoofer and dirac totally ruined the atmosphere it created by making the sub almost not in time with movies or music. The loud booms in movies sounded terrible as the bass pretty much miss where it was supposed to fire. I tried pioneer 's calibration and it went fine so now I'm back to my old vsx90. Did you have any problems with your sub using dirac? I bought a new sub since then but I figure if mcacc works then maybe it's dirac in my listening space?

This or the 505? Seems the extra $130 is worth going with 505, especially for preouts

Bundled Dirac doesn't include Live Bass Control. Which is fine in some rooms and a dealbreaker in others, esp. if your sub placement is dictated by space constraints or furniture arrangement and you can't crawl and sort out optimal placement. You can pay for a Live Bass license or use a different RC solution.

Also, note the AudioScience review of the 505. It's effectively a 305 with pre-amps. Anyway, there's some kind of power of thermal management going on in this Pioneer series that massively drops power output after about a 1/2 minute. Not hitting its rated power for very long before throttling, and the downshift isn't reversed until the unit is power cycled:

The 305 and the 505 don't have the option for dirac live bass. Every receiver model with dirac has it's own dirac. You can't buy a dirac live bass because they never made one for the 305, 505.

That's because contrary to popular belief Dirac Live doesn't offer any of their bass management.
It's recommended to set the parameters prior to running Dirac Live.

Here is a very helpful video(posted on another Onkyo deal) with great tips & tricks.
They worked directly with Dirac and from personal experience very good tips!

If you don't need the preouts pocket the $130 and get this imo.

Yeah I've been trying to decide if I'll end up wanting to add a dedicated amp at some point. I'm in an apartment so probably don't need the extra headroom on volume.

Yea in an apartment unlikely you would take much advantage of external amps.

IMO you should hold off making much investments with all this in an apartment.
Can't really take advantage without being that neighbor.

Two walls in the living room are exterior and there's good insulation between the neighbor's wall, my speakers face away from their wall and I've got the ports plugged. Big wildcard is downstairs/upstairs neighbors.
