There's a reason why there are so many open box units. There's a well known defect with the micro sd card reader , it'll kill itself and the sd card with it. Plenty of reviews online about units with this same exact issue. I bought mine from BB open box excellent and it came kind of dirty but nothing return worthy. Sd card reader died within 2 weeks of normal use with aggressive fan curves.

Be careful here with open box. The ROG Ally has a very known SD card reader issue. Asus has been very coy to address it. They released a fan curve update a few weeks back, but still have no communication to address/correct the SD failures. Most seem to think its a hardware design issue.

For $80 buy the open box is like crazy. Don't buy Best Buy open box unless you are okay with the heavy use and potentially oil spray etc without any accessories sometimes even no charger.
I bought 4 open box excellent and 1 satisfactory in the past one month. Every single one of them is heavily used.

I concur with this post. Excellent is not really excellent. You will need some alcohol wipes to make it like new. I am not sure about open box satisfactory though.

And even the alcohol doesn't always help. Satisfactory is close to excellent perhaps one or two chips or scratches. But I won't call them simple open box. I will call them returned after heavily used 14 days and eating on it or spray liquid anyway it's not my liability open box.
If it's not 60% of the price I won't touch one. Buying used electronics especially PC is very risky considering the potential damage.

I just bought one of these "Excellent" from my local BB. Not only it is cover with dust and fingerprints, the charger was swapped with a well-used, off brand 45w one. Not the first time I run into this when buying BB open box "Excellent."

I would not buy an Open Box unit from Best Buy. I just did this and returned immediately, it was listed as "excellent" what I got was a broken unit, analog stick was completely jammed at an angle and immovable, very obviously broken but tossed in a box and listed. Return was easy but it was a complete waste of time and gas to return this. Bright side is person who broke it and returned it left a SanDisk Extreme 256GB card in it so I'm currently using that for my roms on my New Ally lol

I see some open boxes near me for $587.99. Bordering on temping.

I would suggested (based on the cases above)....manage your expectations on a used item and probably do not order sight unseen unless you are okay with having to return if unhappy with the product received.

I got my Ally the day after launch, and it actually had malfunctioning left Joy stick. There was only one new one in stock and they exchanged it, and price matched it.

Price aside, is this thing better than the deck? Im using my s23 with a gamepad attachment on the sides with steam streaming. Want something to take on the go

Id personally take the deck just for the better pause/resume features from SteamOS.

I had gotten a geeksquad geek squad certified excellent and when I saw them put it on big cart I saw the screen touching the cart. No packaging to protect it. Sure enough when I got home there was a big crack all the way through edit: it was for a lg c1

Depends what you are after. It definitely FEELS better than the steamdeck but it also has worse battery life in general. Also it outperforms the steamdeck SLIGHTLY but the real thing is that screen which makes everything feel better.

If you are looking for better performance/feel get the Ally. If you are looking for better battery life/3rd party support get the steamdeck.

I swapped the Deck in for the Ally and would give a slight advantage to the Ally. The Deck OS is way lighter and the pause feature is a pretty big game changer for quick gaming sessions. However, the Ally screen is sharp at 1080p and really pops with color compared to the Deck. Also, having more access to launchers without jumping through hoops on the Ally is nice. If I could do it again (taking price into account), I would get the cheapest Deck option and add more high speed storage through the sd card.

I'm surprised to hear all these bad experiences with open box Excellent. I've had many many great experiences with these products being brand new open box returns. Even some Satisfactory ones can be a great deal, they're sometimes brand new item returns that are just missing the original package. YMMV with this stuff but best buy also is fairly easy with returns if you get one and aren't satisfied.
