I don't have a card or account with this bank. What are the requirements to be a preferred member?
You need to let 100k sit in a checking account doing absolutely nothing for 3 months before you're a preferred member, which gives you an extra 2.5% cashback in primary category...

Considering you can put that 100k in treasury bills andget an easy 1k in 3 months, It makes no sense to do this and makes me think all the people who talk about preferred rewards are bots

Edit: The card and the deal itself are fine, but preferred rewards definitely isn't some financial goal to strive for...

The money doesn't have to be in the checking account... Merrill Lynch accounts work as well. That could be a retirement account or investment account. Not only is a ML account the obvious choice to have your money in over a checking account, it bypasses the 3-month requirement. You're able to activate Preferred Rewards after 30 days.
You still do need a checking account along with your ML account to satisfy PR requirements, but it can just have a single dollar in it.

You shouldn't mislead people about a rewards program you're not actually familiar with.

I've had this card for a long time, be warned that account support on them are a complete disaster. I still use it often for the cash back, but for anything with a sketchy merchant or any reasonably important purchase, I use a different card. Every dispute I've done with bofa has been denied after 60 - 75 days with no explanation. Once my card was stolen and used a few states away - even that dispute was denied.

Wow SAME! I placed a warranty request for a defective heater, it was denied. My only time after many years of card ownership and banking customer for decades. Thinking of moving banks and looking for new cards.

I did get this card before this post for the cash back and shopping category selections. My experience is: a day or two after I received the card I noticed Lowe's had kitchen cabinets on clearance and I was in the market for them so I used this card to spend the $1000 in 90 days for the $200 bonus which I did receive and also set my category to home improvement so I got even more cash back. However, when I went to make the purchase the card was immediately declined. For some reason spending over $1,000 in a national store where the card was ran was considered fraud. I had to call them and went thru 4 different people to finally get to the right person for the issue and sat on the phone for over an hour standing at the Lowe's register after they were closed. I immediately had a very bad taste in my mouth about the card first time I used it. Then the agent who finally got it unlocked kept babbling on about things after I've already been on for so long so I say, "sorry sir but I really gotta get going" and he replied "LISTEN"… yelling at me and acting like I need to stay on the line to listen to his 10 minute long whatever it was he was saying so I hung up on him. Couldn't believe he did that.

Better at what?

This card with 100k at ML/BOA gets you 5.25% on one category of your choice and 3.5% at grocery/warehouse clubs--- though all that shares a single $2500/qrt cap.

At that point you'd also want other BoA cards like one of the unlimited cards that gets you 2.625% back on non-category spend too... and possibly a business cash card for a second 5.25% category.... you'd also get 3.5% on travel/dining with the premium rewards card... but if you travel significantly you can do better elsewhere on those with cards from Chase/Amex/etc

Anyone know how many times I can open this account to get the bonus? I have 2 currently of this Customized Cash account that I got the $200 bonus for already. Wondering if I can open again in the future.

Also, yes, this is also my favorite credit card to use because of the preferred rewards!

This doesn't make sense at all. Let's say I have 100k available to sit in a checking account (I don't).
I can let that money sit in Bank of America to get "preferred awards status", which after three months gives me an additional 2.25% cashback on purchases in a single category (say online stores like amazon) which assumes I know what category a purchase will be applied to (I don't).

OR I can put that 100k in treasury bills that return 5% non-competitively over 13 weeks... who the hell would pick first option???

Edit: I have nothing against this card or this deal, but definitely don't go into this card for preferred rewards...
It doesn't have to be cash. You can have 100K of investment holding at Merrill which is linked to your BoA! I have multiple of this card; 5.25% for dining, online shopping, and travel. Yes, there is a limit of 2500 per quarter, then again, nothing stops you from getting more cards.

Do NOT get ANYTHING related to this bank.
1. You cannot pay online, no way to add it, CS do not know why.
2. They do NOT even provide you a monthly stmt, no paper stmt, no e-stmt. Just NO stmt at all. CS does not know why.
3. Complaints with CFPB just go to a black hole.
totally wrong there. I've been using BOFA credit cards for more than 15 years. Always easy to access payments, statements, and all other info from the website.

pretty sure it's a minimum of $20K to get into Gold status. Keep it there for 3 months. With gold status, u get 25% extra cashback on credit cards, and 5% interest rate boost on savings account.

Exactly 💯%! 75% boost plus you get to choose a category (online purchases for me). With the rewards alone I pay my phone/Internet bill monthly 🙏

What counts as online purchases, if you don't mind me asking…

Like… Amazon, PayPal? Brick and mortar stores but if you purchase online, like BB, Target, etc.?

As long as you buy online. I pay all my bills online with this card. Literally the only card on the market that will give you back that much (assuming you have at least 100k in savings)
