Pretty contentious topic actually. If you're a Samsung household, DV has zero value cause they won't support it.

If you have a high-end Sony, LG, TCL, Hisense, or Panasonic (EU and APAC), then it is definitely worth it.

Cheap non-OLEDs might say DV on the box, but won't have the brightness to make any difference with DV on.
This comes up in every deal thread, and I'm happy to announce the answer is always No.
Absolutely, the PS5 is just a decent basic 4k player, while this thing is pushing S-tier. If you have a entry level TV tho, it's not worth the upgrade

Beyond support for DV on the 820, any reason to get it over the 420?

Is there some kind of consensus on the value of DV?

Not really. If you have a TV that supports DV, and you don't mind paying close to $400 to get it, this is the only real "affordable" option. All other players either suck (read: Sony) or are closer to $900.

Side by side, I'd bet almost no one can tell the difference between hdr10 and DV, but many discs are encoded in DV. This player also has dynamic tone mapping. So if you have an OLED from before 2020, you want this player. Otherwise, you don't need the tone mapping as much.

Agree with you, though reportedly the "build quality" is better? Maybe it's just the external casing.

(I have a projector and opted for the 420).

If you just need a player that does DV just get the 450 (which should be under $200). This one is higher quality and has a better upscaler for those that are looking for that (but well worth the price from what i hear).

There is a very noticeable difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision. DV has much better contrast, and has billions more colors. Not that current displays output all of the colors DV has, but it's noticeably more vibrant.

Not always. Sometimes the DV implementation is noticeably duller and more reserved looking. It may or may not be better.

Yes, for sure. IMO you'll have a significantly better experience. I have used both players.

I got the 420 ob excellent at bb for $150. I'd rather buy ~20 4k discs than this player for only dv even with my LG c2

Since the UBK90 already has Dolby Vision I am not sure it is worth the $400 upgrade.

I have the UBK90 and went with the Sony xm700 because I wanted SACD support.
The Pioneer doesn't support that even though it is much more expensive.

This is a fantastic 4K disc player! Not only does it give you a ton of controls, and info if you're the nerdy AV type, my biggest reason for buying mine was the reliability and "disc-tolerance" haha. What I mean is that my Xbox Series X, and my previous Sony 4K player, each just had certain 4K discs they would refuse to chew on with constant hiccups stuttering and pixelating. Thing is, it had nothing to do with the cleanliness or scratch-0free condition of those discs either because the Panasonic plays them all flawlessly instead.

If you have a large physical media collection and use a projector, this guy is a no-brainer (Though as previous posts have mentioned, the UB-420 is likely a better price/performance combination for projector users as practically no projectors on the market are capable of supporting Dolby Vision anyhow -Sometihng I didn't realize when I bought the 820 lol).

All in all though, this is a very nice player and it works ever so nicely w/ my Epson projector, Denon AVR and a Logitech Harmony hub for control. Highly recommended for film buffs who enjoy the benefits of physical media!
