These are not good for daily use. They have no structure to them and the should straps get uncomfortable after a while of carrying a load. They are great for taking with you in your luggage on a trip and using it while out and about for the day.
Everybody loves these for something packable (basically no padding) but the price is hard to swallow because there used to be deals on them for $5 a few years back. Now, $20 is probably the best you can do. People also like the 30L packable version.
As others have said, this is not great for daily use. I love it for trips so I can fit extra gifts in my suitcase and use this as a carry on, or when I'm doing a day trip and I might want extra pack space coming back. Much better than those fold away tote bags, but there is zero support for long usage.

Probably not good for 20+/- lbs weight and for beach use
Definitely not useable close to that weight. Not sure why it wouldn't work for the beach for you, it makes a great bag to pull out of a suitcase or larger backpack and use at the beach on vacation or travels.

These are awesome for travel or just as a hiking bag. I use it all the time to put extra things I need while traveling, like extra long sleeve for the plane flight, or even can put a jacket in it. It holds passport and all personal essential, or chargers or snacks. Since it has no structure to it, it looks small and can be used as personal item. I use this plus carryon on all my flights, no more checked in bags, even up to 10 day trips. I prefer 20l to 30l, as the latter looks much bigger and not as convenient for just something to carry extra piece of clothing in when you go out to explore a new town or area. And just need something extra for when it is cooler in early morning or later evening. Plus for any gifts you buy and such. Great usability.

My beach bag was heavier than that when i went on vacation. Snorkel gear, spare clothes, cooler with food and water, emergency kit. In the past i used north face, jansport. Now burton for local trips.

Well the problem seems to be that you are using it for travel, unless you mean packed away while traveling. This bag is meant to be used as a packable bag, useful when you reach a destination as a day bag, or when you just need to have a bag for activities on you. It doesn't have much back or shoulder support, but works just fine as a day bag when you get to your location after traveling. They are pretty durable too. I am able to put an owala 24 in the bottle holders. They hold It decently, I wouldn't turn it upside down or swing it around.
I used to use these but they do hurt your shoulders if you travel and take it out for the day, even with a little weight. I found that the ll bean one was better - very similar but with a chest strap that helped distribute weight. I use this for just quick on the go stuff now

I've used one of these for travel for a while now. It's not great. Mostly, it's the way the shoulder straps are positioned. They do not distribute load evenly, so the outside edge digs in more than the other. If you have any kind of load, it can be very uncomfortable. Also the water bottle holders do NOT work. They used to sell "ruckpack" that was very similar, but with much better straps. I think those are gone.
I haven't had trouble tossing a Nalgene in one of the side pockets. It's definitly not the most comfortable bag, but the packability is so handy I almost always bring it on a trip.

I have 20L one from last deal $5, now using it as gym bag with my swimsuit, change clothes, towel and other things. Zipper and garment are surprisingly durable. However, it will hurt your shoulder if heavy. My aged aunt got one too and she loves to bring it with her when travelling. It's packable, lightweighted and is quite convenient to be stuck in her luggage pocket when not being in use. They change design once in a while. Last time the design looked better, IMO.

These are often $10 directly from Eddie Bauer. Even at $10 it's too expensive. I use mine as a packing cube/daypack for travel. Sucks as a backpack since it has so much give and no frame. Don't even think about using it daily maybe only for quick grocery runs. Don't trust your laptop to it like in the image.

Uncomfortable for carrying a load yet OK for usung while out and about for a day?

So probably ok to keep on for an hour at a time before it gets uncomfortable?

I use this as a day bag when I get to my travel destination. Great to carry to the markets or toss a few items into when taking an excursion. Very thin and light, no padding at all.
Good to take to the beach. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it though

Haven't seen this sell for below $20 in over 2 years. Even if it dips below that on Eddie Bauer's site then you have to pay for shipping for orders <$50.

Just here to concur with others. It doesn't have any structure or padding or extra features because it's purpose is to pack down very small. I use mine as a backup in my luggage in case I need to bring some extra stuff back on a trip, especially when visiting family for the holidays.

For quick on the go, these bags are great. I have a few 20L and 30L bags. I use one 20L bag as a bag of bags that holds my bags needed for grocery shopping, and a 30L bag is a great substitute as a diaper bag and change of clothes for a wee one when going places that a stroller would be a nightmare to deal with.

I usually pack a couple into a suitcase when travelling and they have been perfect as day bags.
