Never understood why madagascar vanilla is so much more expensive.

The mexican stuff is delicious - I actually think it tastes better.

The ingredients make it obvious why it's so cheap.

Because actual vanilla comes in at #5 on the list of ingredients. From the product page:

Water, 1.8 Ethyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Vanillin, Pure Vanilla Extract, Caramel Color, Ethyl Vanillin, Potassium Sorbate (as Preservative), Potassium Hydroxide (Acidity Regulator). Contains Artificial and Natural Vanilla Flavors.

With that said, we still use cheap vanilla like this where vanilla flavor gets lost in the mix. No need for us to use expensive stuff with our unsophisticated palates!

It's mostly imitation with some real vanilla blended in. That said, it tastes good and is my preferred vanilla for most uses. If you use a fair bit, the 33.3oz bottle at Sam's for $5.33 is a better deal.

Just in time for holiday baking season. In for 2. One of the best imitations for flavoring.

The best imitation vanilla there is imo. We use this in everything except vanilla icecream or sugar cookies. Real vanilla is too expensive to use when nobody will notice the difference.

note that this not at a "discount". Sells for this same price at Walmart, however, in MY experience (just speaking for my local Walmarts), inventory is spotty at best….so best to get it when and where you find it at regular price, rather than when you run out. Amazon also has a clear version in the same brand thats also good and affordable.

Ah yes, the infamous propylene glycol, also a main ingredient of automobile engine antifreeze.

The 2oz imitation is $2 at my Walmart, and that ones pure imitation, no real vanilla.

Do you use bleach in your recipes?

I believe @edtrussell drew the right parallel. Water and propylene glycol are indeed both ingestible. FDA approves propylene glycol in food products. Antifreeze and bleach are not food, but that does not mean those cannot have components that are. Water + poison is still poison. We still drink water

This is really imitation vanilla(not a bad thing) with just a small amount of real vanilla. Much, much less real vanilla than "pure vanilla extract".

I don't think anyone is under any impressions this isn't imitation. And it's good. Not even your bougie friends will notice it in 97% of applications.

that's ETHYLENE glycol, a different chemical. Propylene glycol is quite safe.
