I got one of these last week (not my money, thankfully) for a client event. Guests were the type who wouldn't use the hotel WiFi with a web-based gateway that requires an email address. Piggybacked off the hotel network and set up a custom network ID with access password so users could get right on without the login page, and it worked like a charm. Guests appreciated the easy access and client was happy that the network name was their stock symbol.

I have the GL.iNET portable and I really like the ease of use, IMO the only feature keeping this from being the perfect travel router is having built in battery, so we could connect more easily at airports, other than that, it's a joy to use(talking about the gl.inet)

That sounds like a problem with your phone. I can get 5+ hours as a hotspot with decent signal on my S23U, and I'm not alone.

Not sure what phone you had, but my experience was.

Always had Verizon.
Always used an unlocked Samsung Galaxy phone (S## family).
I was always able to enable Mobile Hotspot without a problem.
Then I started getting declined with a message that I didn't have the Hotspot feature, which was correct.

Read up somewhere that Samsung finally caved in and started to check if Mobile Hotspot was enabled for the account, even on their unlocked phones (aka. Non Verizon branded phone)

Luckily I have a work around.

Not this exact product, but I used a travel router on our recent cruise on the Utopia, got around the per-device charge and saved quite some money to allow everyone in the family to be online at the same time. Just in case you don't know, while onboard the Utopia, I discovered that if your iCloud account uses an email address (not a phone number), you can use the onboard Wi-Fi for free (not buying any Internet plan), to send iMessage to anyone. I am not sure why Royal Caribbean (or Utopia specifically) allows this.

I would think so as it says captive portal authentication. When I was on a RC cruise I just used my phone and shared it out to the fire stick and GF used it as well when we were in the room or when she needed it outside of the room. It's crazy how many pay for extra devices, 😂

I am writing this comment with it on MSC cruise now. It is easy to set up and you can carry it with you on power bank. A walking router is the router that I need when a family can share one account purchased everywhere.

I just bought and used this exact same router last week on royal Caribbean utopia cruise. I bought one device / one user for $20 per day. When in the room, I would register the royal Caribbean Internet to this travel router. And when I would be out of the room, I would register under my phone and run the hotspot (I have a Google Pixel so I can connect to Wi-Fi and broadcast my own wifi simultaneously).

It worked like a charm and worth the money for everyone to use the Internet.

Avoid TP-Link they are a security problem. Gl has a much better track record and is based on/runs OpenWRT underneath.

The feature is only "paywalled" on 20 year old plans, or the very cheapest unlimited plans.

Most plans have a quota. Which I agree is unethical and illegal.

But times have changed. Most can use hotspot today at no extra cost.

Does this TP-Link Ultra-Portable Wi-Fi AX1500 Travel Router able to connect to WEP network?

When traveling to some people home in rural area which their router still use WEP, GL.iNET were unable to connect to it since GL.iNET router lack WEP support. Yes, we know those people should upgrade their router for better security but we have no control of what they do with their router especially when we are only staying in their places for a short period of time.

Wonder if this TP-Link router able to do connect to those network that only use WEP.
