Plex Pass Features (
source):
- DVR Recording of Live TV
- Hook a compatible tuner and digital antenna up to your local Plex Media Server to let you watch and record free, over-the-air broadcasts available in your area. Record content into your library to gain all the benefits of other personal media: beautiful metadata, access it anywhere and any time, and more. You can, of course, also watch content live, wherever you are, on tons of devices.
- Downloads
- Use Downloads to load copies of your content on your phone or tablet so you can use it when you don't have internet access. Downloads also helps make sure you always have the next episode of your favorite show ready for your commute. You can also Download content to your Windows or Mac desktop Plex app.
- Plexamp & Plex Labs
- Some of the projects coming out of Plex Labs may be available only to Plex Pass subscribers. For instance, the "Plexamp" music player (Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Linux) as well as the "Plex Dash" server management app (Android, iOS) both require active Plex Pass subscriptions to use.
- Skip Movies and TV Show Credits
- Save precious time by skipping over credits in your Movies and TV shows. Your server can analyze movies and episodes to detect credits and give you back precious minutes when you're binging your favorite series or movies.
- Skip TV Show Intros
- Save precious time by skipping over intros in your TV shows. Your server can analyze shows to detect intro segments and give you back precious minutes when you're binging your favorite series.
- Premium Music Features
- Enjoy better artwork and artist bios, automatic lyrics from LyricFind, loudness leveling, sweet fades, visualizers, and more.
- Hardware-Accelerated Streaming
- When using a compatible device or processor on the Plex Media Server, subscribers can make use of hardware acceleration when content needs to be converted (transcoded) during streaming. This can be faster and more power-efficient for users.
- Custom Sharing Restrictions
- Create customized restriction settings when sharing with family and close, personal friends. Restrict based on content ratings or your own custom labels.
- Bandwidth and Transcoding Limits
- Plex Pass subscribers have additional control over processor usage and network/bandwidth usage when streaming.
- Early Access
- Users with an active Plex Pass subscription often get early access to new features or apps. For instance, both Chromecast support and Plex Home Theater were available to Plex Pass subscribers prior to being released for all users.

You don't really need a video, it's pretty simple to explain in words. You watch your own video files and stuff from other devices + they recently added some free channels.

Why not just try it out? They're both completely free to try and take like a couple of minutes to set up.

This. I am a tech guy too and I don't really want to spend so much time managing my media and tinkering with settings to get metadata to populate properly or have the files named a certain way. This works out of the box and is relatively low maintenance. Time saved is extra time to actually consume the media.
Once in a while, I would have issues with the library not refreshing new media but never really takes more than a few minutes of troubleshooting to get it to show up.

For example, I have a dedicated PC for running a Plex server 24/7 that has all my "Linux ISOs". I can then watch any of my own files on my phone, TV, laptop, etc. from anywhere (including outside the house) through the Plex app. You can share your library with someone else by adding their email address. Then they can just log into Plex with their email and be able to watch the stuff that you shared (you can specifically choose which libraries to share/not share).
Someone else linked the benefit of the Plex Pass. I purchased it mainly for hardware transcoding and the ability to skip intros & credits to TV shows, and honestly that alone was worth it, aside from wanting to support the developers.
With streaming services being dog-s**t lately in terms of incorporating ads, charging more per month, limited content unless you subscribe to like 5 different services (at ~$10-$20/month each), downloading Linux ISOs and hosting your own content seemed to have gotten a bit more traction again lately.
Edit: I forgot to add that you can use Plex for free. The Plex Pass just adds some features and is a good way to support the developers if you really enjoy it.
