Buy a plane ticket if all you care about is the destination.

I've done both.
They are completely different experiences. (Both have their merits, but both are completely different.)
So yes, they're expensive. But it's worth it once if there's a Disney fan around.

Food and dinner service was hands down better on Disney. Disney includes soda/juice with the cruise. They do not offer a drink package. The character and princess meet & greets are fun. The theater performances were better also more targeting kids.
The pool area on the independence felt and probably was larger. They had "hot" tubs that the kids could go into. The rock wall and wave rider were fun but we missed the giant tube slide on the Disney boat. The independence had ice skating and laser tag.
We are not gamblers so we did not use the casino on the independence. We walked through it a couple times and it was smoky.
Royal's private island had more to do than Disney's. Food on Coco cay was probably the best we had on the independence. We have not been to Disney's new private island.
The real kicker for us was room size / price. We are a family of 6 and Disney doesn't have a reasonable option. On prior sailings we took the grandparents along. Royal had a lower level suite that fit 6. The suite class was still cheaper than two of Disney's cheaper rooms.
Some of the perks with the lower level suite were nice. Priority boarding and departure from the ship. Free booze happy hour every day. Tour of the bridge. And some others that I am forgetting.
We will likely travel on royal again for our next cruise but I wouldn't rule out a Disney one again.
Use a travel planner! We'll do it for you!

In terms of Disney Cruise Line, this is a good promotion. They don't often have them. I'm a travel agent for them and typically the most we see is the decreased deposit promotion!
